The Person, The Golfer
Anyone who has know Mike Weir for any length of time will know that
he's got his priorities figured out. Avove all else, his
family comes first. His wife Bricia and two daughters Elle and
Lili are the most important thing in his life. Mike knows How
fortunate he is to have a loving family that support him in doing
what he loves to do. Mike enjoys the process of
consistently working on his golf swing to be the best player
that he can be and he also loves the process of being the best
father and husband he can be.
Mike is very goal oriented and it shows as you look back on his
life. At the age of 11 he started golfing and by the age of 13
he had the vision of playing on the PGA TOUR so firmly planted in
his mind that had to get a very serious question answered.
Should he continue playing left handed, which came naturally
to him or should he change to right handed, as there weren't many
great left handed golfers out on TOUR. The only person, in his
mind, to as would be the greatest player ever - Jack Nicklaus.
And so he did, and within a very long month, Mr. Nicklaus replied
and suggested Mike should stay with his natural swing. Good
advice and wisely taken.
From that point on Mike was very serious about his golf game and
practice. He played various sports but the dream of playing on
tour was most prevalent in his mind. While most of his friends
were doing the things young teenage boys did, Mike would be found on
the driving range at Huron Oaks practicing for hours and hours under
the direction of Steve Bennett, his first pro. His focus and
determination were admirable and needless to say, it paid off.
Mike began college in 1988, after being recruited by 5 different
colleges for golf scholarships. He ended up in Utah at Brigham
Young University playing under Coach Tucker. During his
sophomore year at BYU, Mike met his wife-to-be, Bricia, who also
attended BYU. Mike and Bricia were married on April 30, 1994
at St. Michael's Church in Bright's Grove and are now blessed with
their two daughters, Elle and Lili.
It is because of their two daughters that Mike and Bricia formed the
Mike Weir Foundation on March 1, 2005. They are well aware of
how fortunate they are to have two beautiful and healthy children.
Many children suffer emotionally, physically or educationally and
many parents are not able to assist their children in times of need
due to their social or economic circumstances. Mike is at a
point in his life where he is able to make a difference in the lives
of thoses that are less fortunate than he is. He has been
extremely succesful in his career playing a game he loves to play,
and makes an important difference in children's lives through his
Foundation.
The first donation through The Mike Weir Foundation was to the
Sarnia Lambton Hospital Foundation of $70,000.00 in May of 2004.
