Women's Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision to Hofstra
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –
Hofstra got out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and
survived a spirited effort after the break by the
Indiana women’s soccer team (3-4-0) to emerge with a 3-1
victory over the Hoosiers on Sunday. Three different
players scored for the Pride (4-1-0), while Kaylin Clow
had her first career goal for IU.
“We came out strong after the half, but hit the post and
the crossbar with our efforts,” head coach Mick Lyon
said. “The bad start to the game was too much to
overcome. I thought our subs - particularly Kaylin Clow
and Darby Hannon - were terrific.”
After Hofstra took a 2-0 lead into the locker room, the
Hoosiers came out of the break with a strong effort.
Just 20 seconds into the frame, Carly Samp delivered a
header that glanced off the crossbar, and Orianica
Velasquez missed just high on a shot a couple minutes
later. In the 55th minute, IU had another grade-A
chance, as Velasquez’ brilliant service found Lara Ross
at the back post, but the freshman’s header glanced off
the post and the rebound was cleared by the Pride.
In the 65th minute, keeper Lindsay Campbell came through
with two brilliant plays to keep it a two-goal deficit.
Salma Tarik’s one-touch effort on the back post was
kicked away by the junior, and she followed that up with
an impressive punch out of a Hofstra cross.
The Pride, though, delivered its final tally in the 72nd
minute. Danielle Murino made a nice cross at the top of
the box to Tarik, and the senior converted this time
with a strong shot to the lower left corner for her
fifth goal of the season.
IU refused to go quietly, though, and after HU’s Grace
Hawkins was sent off with a straight red card on a
tackle of Jocelyn Moses, the Hoosiers cracked the
scoreboard.
Ciersten Burks started the play with a hard, low shot
from just outside the box on the right side, and after
Krista Thorn made the initial save, Kaylin Clow jumped
on the rebound and slipped it home to make the score 3-1
at 81:08. That was as close as the Hoosiers would get,
though, as the Pride was able to pack it in defensively
for the final nine minutes.
HU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the
opening half, as Brittany Butts converted a rebound goal
at 1:30 off a rebound from a corner kick. Courtney
Breen’s initial attempt was knocked away by Shannon
Flower, but the ricochet came to Butts at the top of the
box, and the junior was able to convert with a low
blast. The Pride then added a second goal in the first
stanza, as Laura Greene converted a tough-angle shot
that slipped inside the near post to make it 2-0.
Thorn made one save to improve to 2-0-0 on the season,
as the Pride took both its games against Big Ten foes,
following up on a 3-1 victory over Purdue on Friday.
Flower fell to 0-2-0 on the year, making two saves
before being replaced by Campbell in the 28th minute.
Campbell also posted two saves in the loss.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday night at
Armstrong Stadium, when they will play host to Kent
State at 7:30 p.m. IU also hosts Central Michigan
(Sunday, 1 p.m.) in its final non-conference weekend.
