Golden Goal Gives Hoosiers 2-1 Win in Home Opener
Freshman Lara Ross scored the game-winner with
two minutes left in overtime
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana freshman defender
Lara Ross scored with just over two minutes remaining in
the second overtime period to give the Hoosiers a 2-1
victory over Western Michigan (2-2-0) at Armstrong
Stadium on Wednesday night. Junior midfielder Devon
Beach scored the other goal for the Hoosiers, her third
of the season.
“At the end of the day it is a win,” head coach Mick
Lyon said afterwards. “Our kids deserve a lot of credit
for hanging tough and sticking with it and coming out
with a ‘W’ tonight.”

Indiana (3-1-0)
was able to get on the board first in the
30th minute when Beach threw herself at a
perfectly crossed ball from freshman Becca
Zambon and headed it into the goal. It was
the 11th career goal for Beach and the first
collegiate point for Zambon.
Three minutes later, WMU evened the score on
a goal by Stephanie Skowneski, her second of
the season, as she got loose in front of the
goal and put it home from 10 yards out.
After neither team could find the board in
the second half and first overtime session,
time was ticking away in the second extra
period when the Hoosiers drew a corner kick.
Sophomore Orianica Velasquez sent the kick
into the box where junior Carly Samp flicked
the ball on to Ross at the back post and
hammered into the upper third of the goal to
send the Hoosiers off with a victory.

"This was a great team
victory for us out here tonight," Ross said. "We really
worked hard and I was in the right place at the right
time and was able to find a way to give us the win."
Both teams had great chances to take the lead in the
second half and even end the game in the first overtime
session but could not capitalize. Indiana senior
goalkeeper Lauren Hollandsworth made a diving save to
her right to deflect a ball wide of the goal late in the
second half when the Broncos were able to get behind the
IU defense. Hollandsworth now has 21 career wins in
goal, the third-most by an IU keeper in program history.
