Hoosiers Erase Two-Goal
Deficit, Earn 3-2 OT Win at Iowa
Senior Leigh Anne Cummings had a goal and
assisted on the game-winning goal
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Senior Leigh Anne Cummings scored
the first IU goal and then assisted on Carly Samp’s
game-winning goal in the 94th minute to lead the
Hoosiers (5-10-1, 1-6 Big Ten) to a 3-2 road win against
the Iowa Hawkeyes (7-8-2, 0-6-1 Big Ten). Orianica
Velasquez registered the tying goal in the second half
to continue the IU comback effort.
“The difference in the game today was that after we were
down by two goals, I could tell that the girls decided
right there that they were not going lose this game,”
Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. “They were
determined to make the comeback and I think we wanted
the win a little bit more than they did.”
Freshman goalkeeper Shannon Flower picked up her first
collegeiate win in goal for the Hoosiers, making three
saves and turning away a couple other dangerous scoring
chances by the Hawkeyes.
“We have been working very hard with Shannon on taking
control of the back line and she did an excellent job in
the second half and that was the difference,” Lyon said.
Iowa got on the board less than four minutes into the
game on Morgan Showalter’s fourth goal of the season.
Then in the 35th minute Jenna Aleo gave Iowa a 2-0 lead
on Mandy Heimann’s second assist of the game.
Just four minutes later, Cummings was on the receiving
end of a cross from Devon Beach and she beat the Iowa
keeper to the near post to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Indiana continued to pressure the Iowa goal and it
carried over into the second half. In the 57th minute
Velasquez pressured the Iowa defenders and gathered a
loose ball and promptly found the net at the far post
for her seventh goal of the season to tie the game a
2-2.
Neither team was able to dent the scoreboard the
remainder of regulation so the game went to overtime.
Less than a minute into the overtime session, the
Hawkeyes had a header attempt hit the crossbar and the
follow-up rebound sail over the crossbar.
The Hoosiers responded just over three minutes later
when Velasquez sent Cummings in behind the Hawkeye
defense with a pass over the top. Cummings beat the
first defender and made her way towards the endline
before dropping a pass to the far post where Samp was
waiting to punch home the game-winner.
Indiana will continue Big Ten play Thursday when they
travel to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions at
7:00 p.m. The game is scheduled to be carried LIVE on

Notes
• The goal was Samp’s eighth of the season and she
now has 39 career points to take over sole possession of
seventh place on the career list at IU.
• Cummings’ three-point game was the first of her
career. For most of the season she has played the left
side of the defense but was inserted into an attacking
midfield position for this game and responded.
• The last time Indiana came back from a two-goal
deficit was Sept. 11, 2009, at Hofstra. In that game,
the Hoosiers scored two goals in the final nine minutes
and then got the game-winner in the second overtime
period.
