Aggressive Second
Half Play Not Enough in Hoosiers 2-1 Loss to Michigan
Orianica Velasquez scored
the IU goal on a penalty kick
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Orianica Velasquez scored on
a penalty kick late in the second half but the Michigan
Wolverines (7-2-4, 2-1-2 Big Ten) defeated the Hoosiers
(4-10-1, 0-6 Big Ten) by a 2-1 margin on Sunday
afternoon at Armstrong Stadium.
“Michigan was able to get an early one on us,” Indiana
head coach Mick Lyon said, “but we made some adjustments
at halftime and played very well in the second half. We
gave them a lot of in the second half and had a couple
chances to get the equalizer but just could not find the
net.”
Indiana outshot the Wolverines in the game 12-9 but it
was the Wolverines were able to find the back of the net
for a pair of tallies.
Trailing 2-0 in the 72nd minute, IU junior midfielder
Devon Beach was pulled down from behind trying to get to
a centering pass from Jocelyn Moses and the Hoosiers
were awarded a penalty kick. Velasquez stepped up and
drilled the kick into the lower left side of the goal
before the UM keeper could react, cutting the Wolverines
lead to 2-1.
A couple minutes later, Velasquez teed up a free kick
from just out side the box in the middle of the field
but low, driving shot was saved by Michigan keeper Haley
Kopmeyer. Kopmeyer finished with six saves in the
contest.
Indiana had another golden chance to tie the game in the
closing minutes when Darby Hannon beat her defender and
sent a crossing pass into the middle of the six-yard box
but Moses was unable to get her foot on it and the ball
rolled through the box and was cleared away.
The Wolverines broke into the scoring column at the 4:54
mark of the first half on a second ball sent in
following a corner kick. Amanda Bowery picked up the
goal, her second of the year, and Jackie Carron was
credited with the assist. Then four minutes into the
second half, the Wolverines struck again, this time it
was Clare Stachel with the marker and Sheline Zadorsky
with the helper.
Just as a number of other teams at IU have done this
month, the women’s soccer team joined the fight to help
raise awareness for breast cancer on Sunday by wearing
pink shorts with their white uniform tops. It was all
part of the “Hoosiers Play for a Cure” campaign.
Indiana will be back on the road next weekend with a
road trip to Iowa City to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
The game will start at 3:00 p.m. ET and will be
broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
