The last time the Hoosiers (4-0-0) defeated
a ranked opponent was Oct. 19, 2008 when
they defeated #25 Illinois, 1-0. The
Hoosiers were able to advance against No. 8
Purdue in the NCAA Tournament in 2007,
however the game ended in a 0-0 tie and the
Hoosiers advanced via penalty kicks.
Indiana also defeated then-No. 13 USC at
home on Sept. 9, 2007, and the Trojans went
on to claim the NCAA National Championship.
“I think Leigh Anne’s goal kind of
summed up the match,” Indiana head coach
Mick Lyon said of the game-winner. “The
extra effort that was required is what made
the difference and put us on top today.
Devon Beach's extra effort to get the ball
first and then to get it to Leigh was
tremendous. And we train every day to shoot
to the far post and it ended up working out
well for us.”
The play began when freshman Hannah Davidson
controlled the ball near midfield and lost
her footing. Sophomore Devon Beach came
racing by and took the ball from Davidson
and proceeded up the right sideline. After a
couple dribbles, she sent a perfect lead
pass to Cummings towards the box. Cummings
gathered the pass and held off the defender
as she headed towards the goal before firing
a low shot to the far post that got past UF
goalkeeper Katie Fraine for the winning
tally.
The first Indiana goal came in the 58th
minute off a free kick from just inside
midfield. Junior Chloe McKay sent a perfect
pass in towards the middle of the box and
seemed to have eyes as it perfectly found
the head of Beach, who beat Fraine to the
far post for her second goal of the year.
For McKay, it was her second assist of the
season.
“She had been working very hard before she
got the ball,” Beach said of Cummings’ goal,
“and her run was timed perfectly. And her
shot is something that we work on all the
time so that was exciting.”
The Hoosiers caught an unfortunate break in
62nd minute when a clearing attempt was
popped in front of the goal. The ball
appeared to be coming down into the hands of
sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell,
however the spin on the ball allowed it to
slip out of her hands and into the goal for
an own goal and tied the game at 1-1.
The Hoosiers also had a golden scoring
chance in the 16th minute when Carly Samp
broke in on goal all alone and flicked a
shot to the right side, but Fraine was up to
the task and made a diving save to keep the
game scoreless.
Indiana is back out on the pitch on Sunday
for its first road game of the season, as
they travel to Mercer University in Athens,
Ga., for a battle with the Bears starting at
