EVANSTON,
Ill. – The 19th ranked Indiana
women’s soccer team (8-2, 0-1 Big Ten)
suffered a tough 1-0 loss at the hands
of Northwestern (4-5-1, 1-0 Big Ten) on
a goal in the 81st minute. The Hoosiers
out-shot the Wildcats, 9-8, but put six
of those on goal compared to just two
for Northwestern. |

"We had three really good
opportunities to score a goal
tonight and were not able to put the
ball past the keeper,” said IU head
coach Mick Lyon. “We played very
good soccer, in terms of playing the
ball to each other's feet and making
good passes, but the different style
of Northwestern was something that
we need to adjust to better in the
future so we can win these Big Ten
road games."
Orianica Velasquez Herrera had a
pair of shots on goal in the first
13 minutes of action and Liz Holby
closed the half with a shot on goal
that was saved by NU goalkeeper
Carolyn Edwards.
Then in the second half, IU put
together a nice combination play
that put Devon Beach on goal but she
was not able to convert the chance
and the game remained scoreless.
Carly Samp looked to have a scoring
chance of her own on a through ball
but was flagged for offsides on a
very close play.
In the 81st minute, NU’s Alicia
Herczeg put home a header off a free
kick for what would prove to be the
game-winning goal.
IU keeper Lindsay Campbell made two
saves in the losing effort while
Edwards made six saves in goal for
Northwestern.
Friday night’s shout marked the
first time since Oct. 10, 2008 at
Wisconsin that the Hoosiers did not
score a goal, a span of 14 games.
That is the longest streak of games
with at least one goal scored since
2000 and 2001 seasons. The Hoosiers
scored in the final game of the 2000
season and then added at least one
marker in the first 13 games of the
2001 season.
No. 19 Indiana returns to action on
Sunday in Madison, Wis., against the
Badgers starting at 1:00 p.m.
Central Time.
