Velasquez Herrera got the Hoosiers
on the board at the 14:26 mark by
putting home a blocked shot for her
third goal of the season. Christie
Kotynski took a shot from 15 yards
out on the left side that was
blocked by a Green Bay (2-5)
defender and rolled right to the
left foot of Velasquez Herrera, who
put it in the back of the net. Kotynski
was credited with the assist, the
third of the year for her.
Through the middle of the game
neither team was able to mount much
of a consistent attack until the
Hoosiers were able to put a nice
combination play together. Chloe
McKay controlled a loose ball around
30 yards from the Green Bay goal and
played a soft pass to the feet of
Velasquez Herrera, who then sent a
one-touch pass to Carly Samp. Samp
then returned the favor and sent a
lead pass through the defense that
Velasquez Herrera tracked down
inside the far left side of the box.
As she turned towards the goal, she
was taken down from behind inside
the box and the official awarded a
penalty kick. It would be Velasquez
Herrera that stepped up an took the
kick and promptly deposited it in
the lower left side of the goal past
the diving Phoenix keeper for her
fourth goal of the year, and third
in the last two games.
The last time IU scored on a penalty
kick was Sept. 7, 2008 against Cal
Poly.
“To close out the non-conference
part of our schedule, this was a
nice win,” Indiana head coach Mick
Lyon said. “But now we are going
into our Big Ten schedule and things
are going to get much more
challenging. So we are going to rest
up and come out ready to go on
Friday against Northwestern.”
Velasquez Herrera nearly scored her
third goal late in the game as she
sent a left-footed drive on goal
that Aliena Debelak was able to
deflect up and over the crossbar.
The Indiana defenders were at it
once again on Friday at Armstrong,
not allowing the Phoenix to get a
shot off the entire game.
Meanwhile, Indiana had six shots in
each half and drew five corner kicks
to three for Green Bay.
Indiana starts Big Ten play on
Friday when it travels to
Northwestern starting at 7:30 p.m.
Central time.
