WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The 25th
ranked Indiana women’s soccer team needed
some late-game heroics from a pair of
seniors to come away with a 3-2 win in the
second overtime period against the Hofstra
Pride on Friday evening. The Hoosiers
(6-0-0) trailed by two goals with just over
nine minutes left before a Kelly Lawrence
scored her first goal and Christie Kotynski
tacked on the tying and winning goal. |

The perfect 6-0-0 is now the best start
in school history, surpassing the 5-0-0
marks set in 1994 and in 2000.
“What an amazing finish to a very tough
game,” Indiana head coach Mick Lyon
said. “Hofstra plays a very difficult
style and the artificial turn was wet so
the conditions were not ideal. But our
seniors stepped up in a huge way tonight
and really willed us to this win.”
Just as she did last weekend against
Mercer when the Hoosiers were trailing
in the second half, Lawrence ignited the
Indiana offense from the backfield.
This time she found the scoring column
when she sent a free kick from midfield
at 81:55 that bounced once and snuck in
the upper right corner of the goal for
her first of the season.
In the final three minutes, the Hoosiers
were in command of play as they drew
four corner kicks, with the final one
netting the equalizer. Just as Lawrence
led the rally last week, Christie
Kotynski was credited with the
game-winner against Mercer and came up
clutch once again on Friday. Chloe
McKay initiated the corner kick in to
Devon Beach who then sent a ball into
the box that Kotynski redirected into
the goal at the 88:48 mark to tie the
game at 2-2.
Kotynski would strike again in the 105th
minute with a shot that left little
doubt as to its eventual destination the
second it left her foot. Lawrence took
a direct kick from 30 yards out and
rolled it to her right as Kotynski came
running in. The Hudson, Ohio native
sent a blast to the upper right corner
of the goal that left the Hofstra keeper
with little chance to make a save.
Lindsay Campbell made a season-high five
saves in the Indiana goal to pick up her
fourth win of the season in her first
game back from an injury that kept her
out the previous game and a half.
The Pride took an early 1-0 lead on goal
by Kayla Pifer with just 6:30 minutes
having gone by. Hofstra struck again
early in the second half on a goal by
Salma Tarik at the 58:13 mark to take a
2-0 lead. The Pride sees its record fall
to 39-10-4 at home since the start of
2003.
Indiana will take the field next on
Sunday at 1 p.m. against the St. John’s
Red Storm.
