No. 22 Indiana Earns 0-0 Tie at Michigan

Campbell earns seventh shutout of the year, the second-most in a single season by an IU keeper
 

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 22 Indiana women’s soccer team earned a 0-0 tie at the University of Michgan on Sunday afternoon in Big Ten Conference play.  Sophomore Lindsay Campbell went the distance in goal for the Hoosiers and made three saves to keep the game scoreless.  Freshman Orianica Velasquez Herrera led the Hoosiers with five shots in the game, including three on goal.
“Our defenders played brilliantly today,” said Indiana head coach Mick Lyon.  “They really played well as a unit and did a great job of turning away Michigan’s scoring chances.  We just needed to be a little more creative than we were in our attacking third to create some better scoring chances against their defense.

”Indiana (9-3-2, 1-2-2 Big Ten) generated the first three shots of the game 15 minutes into the first half, but Velasquez Herrera, Chloe McKay and Kelly Lawrence all missed the mark.  Velasquez Herrera added two more shots later in the half and McKay put her second shot of the game wide and the teams went into halftime scoreless.  The Wolverines (5-7-3, 0-2-3 Big Ten) had just two shots in the first half, but one of them was a header off a corner kick that went off the post and was then cleared by the defense of the Hoosiers.

 

In the second half, Indiana was able to get six more shots towards the goal but none of them were able to find the back of the net.  Carly Samp had all three of her shots in the second half, including a good opportunity as the half came to a close that forced Haley Kopmeyer to make a save.
 

 

Campbell was forced into action in the 83rd minute, as she made two saves in succession as Michigan mounted a counter attack looking for the go-ahead goal. 

 

In the overtime sessions, the teams played even statistically as Campbell and Kopmeyer both made one save apiece to preserve the tie, and Campbell's seventh shutout of the year, which is tied for the second-most in a single season by an IU goalkeeper.  The single-season record is eight, set by Ashley Davis in 1998.

 

The Hoosiers return home next Sunday, Oct. 25 for a meeting with Iowa at Armstrong Stadium starting at 2 p.m.
