Indiana’s record goes to
9-3-1 on the year and 1-2-1 in
Big Ten play while Illinois goes
to 5-4-3 overall and 0-1-2 in
conference action.
The Hoosiers took the early lead
when McKay played a long through
ball from beyond midfield that
found Beach sprinting down the
middle of the field and put her
one-on-one with the Illinois
keeper, Alexandra Kapicka.
Beach drove in on Kapicka and
slotted a ball low and to the
right corner of the goal for the
marker.
Illinois was able to answer
exactly two minutes later when
Marissa Mykines took a free kick
from 25 yards out and sent a
shot towards the upper left
corner of the goal, where IU
goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell was
unable to get to it and knot the
score at 1-1.
For the rest of the game, the
two teams were able to match
each other with limited scoring
chances. Indiana had a couple
shots early in the second half
that went just wide and Illinois
put a couple shots on goal that
Campbell was easily able to save
and keep the game tied.
“In the first half, we were not
pressuring them enough when they
had the ball,” said Indiana head
coach Mick Lyon. “But we made
some adjustments at halftime and
put a lot more pressure on them
in the second half and generated
a few good scoring chances.”
The best opportunity for either
team came as the end of the
first 10-minute over time period
came to a close and Illinois was
on the attack. The Illini sent
a crossing pass to the far post
where it was then one-touched
passed Campbell and looked to be
going in the goal but another
Illini player ended up touching
it before it went in the goal
and they were whistled for
offsides.
Then in the 103rd minute,
Indiana freshman Orianica
Velasquez Herrera was served a
perfect pass from McKay on the
right wing and she tried to head
it home but was not able to get
enough on it to beat Kapicka.
The final stats all indicated
that it was a very close game
throughout, as the teams had the
same number of shots (16).
Campbell finished the game with
five saves while Kapick had four
and the Illinois earned one more
corner kick than the Hoosiers,
6-5.
