Indiana (10-6-2, 2-5-2
Big Ten) now has one
game remaining in the
regular season, a road
trip to Minnesota on
Friday for a 7 p.m.
Central Time start.
Purdue (11-5-3, 4-3-2
Big Ten) will take on
Iowa this weekend in its
regular season finale.
Purdue was able to
control play in the
first half but was
unable to get any
quality opportunities as
they were forced to take
shots from farther out
to allow Lauren
Hollandsworth to make
six relatively easy
saves. The Hoosiers
took four shots in the
first half and none of
them found their way on
goal.
All
of that quickly changed
at the start of the
second half, as Carly
Samp took a pass in the
left corner and beat the
Purdue defender near the
endline. She then fed a
perfect pass to the PK
area where McKay was
waiting to find a wide
open goal. For Samp, it
was her fifth assist of
the season.
Two
minutes later Stellhorn
found Jessica Warren at
the top of the 18-yard
box, who gathered it and
fired a shot towards the
right post that
Hollandsworth was not
able to corral and tie
the game at 1-1.
The
teams traded
opportunities for the
remainder of the half
and went to the first
overtime period. Just
over a minute into the
first overtime period,
Carly Samp took a
perfect through ball
from Orianica Velasquez
Herrera and was 1-on-1
with the keeper from 16
yards out but Purdue
keeper Jenny Bradfisch
was able to cut down the
angle and force Samp’s
shot wide to the right.
In
the 110th
minute, Stellhorn lined
up the free kick to the
right of the 18 after a
foul was called on the
Hoosiers. She sent a
curling ball into the
box around the six that
found the head of Forbes
for the game-winner.
Hollandsworth finished
the game with nine saves
for the Hoosiers, a
career high for the
junior, topping her
previous high of eight
against Purdue on Nov.
18 in the second round
of the NCAA Tournament.
