Indiana has now kept its opponents off the
scoreboard for the last 500:58, which dates
back to Oct. 17, 2008 against Purdue. This
streak is the second-longest in school
history, but still well behind the 808:34
minutes the 1993 team set as the record.
“We defended very well, and they are a good
team, which we knew coming in,” Indiana head
coach Mick Lyon said. “They didn’t get
behind us and we didn’t get caught up, and
they threw everything they had at us today
and we were able to handle it.”
Freshman Orianica Velasquez Herrera received
a pass near midfield and, in one motion,
made a perfect touch pass over her head to a
streaking Samp. Samp was then able to
shield the CMU defender with her right side
while she broke towards the goal and fired a
low shot to the right side of the goal with
her left foot. It was Samp’s first goal of
the season and third of her career while
Velasquez Herrera picked up her first
collegiate assist on the play.
“Ori just popped it up towards me and I ran
towards it and was able to hold the defender
off long enough to put it in low on the
right side,” Samp said of the game-winning
goal. “We work on combinations a lot and it
was nice to be able to get one to work in
the game.”
The Hoosiers’ defense was again the story of
the day, as they were able to hold a dynamic
Central Michigan team to just four shots in
each half, and Campbell only had to make
three saves to earn her eighth career win in
goal and also her seventh career shutout.
Indiana meanwhile had 15 shots in the game
and forced CMU goalkeeper Shay Mannino to
make six saves in the game.
Shortly after Samp put the Hoosiers on top
early in the first half, she had a chance to
add to the lead as she took a pass on the
right side of the box and broke in towards
the CMU keeper. She fired a hard shot to
the far post but Mannino was able to knock
it down and fall on it for the save.
The 3-0 start to the year marks the first
time the Hoosiers have done so under head
coach Mick Lyon, and is the best start since
2000, when Indiana started 5-0.
The Hoosiers will return to Armstrong
Stadium on Friday, Sept. 4, for a date with
No. 7 Florida, with the start scheduled for
1:00 p.m.
