TEAM ONTARIO RED WINS GOLD MEDAL AT 2009 NATIONAL
WOMEN’S UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIP; TEAM ONTARIO BLUE
WINS SILVER WHILE QUEBEC WINS BRONZE
SURREY, B.C – Team Ontario Red won the gold medal
game for the sixth straight time Sunday at the
National Women’s Under-18 Championship in Surrey,
B.C.
The defending champions beat Ontario Blue 5-1 at
South Surrey Arena. It marked the first time that
Team Ontario Blue made it to the final.
Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont.) opened up the
scoring for Team Ontario Red 14 seconds into the
period to set the pace for the remainder of the
game. She then put the puck on the stick of Jenna
McParland (Schreiber, Ont.), who found the back of
the net and made it 2-0 going into the intermission.
Shannon Stoneburgh (Pickering, Ont.) put Ontario Red
up 3-0 at 4:13 of the second period but Ontario Blue
came back with a goal of its own on a Vanessa Welten
(Crysler, Ont.) shot at 10:17 to make it 3-1 moving
into the third period.
Ontario Red scored twice more in the final frame to
secure another championship, with Rattray assisting
on goals by Shannon Doyle (Baldwin, Ont.) and
McParland to secure the final 5-1 score.
The game was watched by close to 1,000 fans in
Surrey, along with a national TV audience on TSN2.
The game will be broadcast on tape delay on RDS.

In Sunday’s bronze medal game, Quebec beat Manitoba
2-1, with Christine Lambert (Thetford Mines, Que.)
scoring both of her teams goals. Manitoba’s only
goal of the game came from Natasha Kostenko (Fannystelle,
Man.).
