Sarnia Spirit vs. London Super Sonics
June 15

Sarnia Spirit hosted the league leading London Super Sonics Monday June 15. The Spirit had the first good scoring chance when Alexa Van Hoorn  passed the ball ahead to Claire Vanden Eynde on the wing. Vanden Eynde raced down the field and spotted Kyleigh Arthur. Arthur made a dangerous cross but no one was available to tap the ball in, keeping the game scoreless.

London attacked with speed through the Sarnia defense but Ashleigh Pettit stood tall in the Sarnia net to deny the chance. London tried to take the lead when a free kick rewarded outside the box , resulted in a hard shot on net but the rebound was kicked wide.

Both teams battled for control of the mid-field and chances were limited by both teams.

Sarnia found their passing game with Kristin Parkes hitting Vanden Eynde on to Kristy Hodgins who spotted Katie Barwitzki but the shot was pushed aside by the London keeper. Neither was able to capitalize in the scoreless first half.

London was not accustomed to being in tight games and Sarnia continued to keep them off balance with good team pressure. Emma Colman read the play and stepped up from her defensive position in the Spirit backfield. Colman passed to Vanessa Wardell on the wing. Wardell spotted Ashleigh Pettit charging hard. A good pass led Pettit and the striker made no mistake with a hard shot past the London keeper  to give Sarnia the lead.

Sarnia had London on its heels. Skylar Soininen streaked down the wing and found Vanessa Bucci but the shot was kept out by the London net minder.

London found their composure and were rewarded when they marched down the field with good passing and beat the Sarnia defense. A shot at the net eluded Nicole Bus and London had tied the score at 1’s.

Sarnia did not wilt. Crisp passing by Wardell to Bucci to Kristy over to Sophie McKelvie gave the Spirit a chance take the lead but the shot was kept out by a good save.

London was desperate to take the lead but Lauren Shaw answered their advances from the Sarnia backfield allowing the Spirit to continue their undefeated season with a well earned 1-1 tie.
