August 7, 2008 Sarnia Spirit vs Waterloo Phoenix – Veteran’s
Field, Sarnia (1-1)
Sarnia
was off to a commanding start controlling the play in
Waterloo’s end. Sarnia had many beautiful chances to bury
the ball but just couldn’t finish. In the first half a
great through ball from Shelby Auterhoff was picked up by
Mackenzie Colbran. Mackenzie fired a rocket shot over the
goalie’s head for the 1st goal of the match.
Unfortunately Waterloo answered within minutes to tie.
Sarnia continued to pressure and controlled the entire game,
but they just couldn’t find the net a second time. Sarnia
had to settle for a tie game 1-1.
August 9, 2008 Sarnia Spirit vs Eastside Kickers –
Veteran’s Field, Sarnia (0-5)
Eastside
Kickers took instant control of the game and an unfortunate
change reaction of Sarnia errors lead to Eastside’s 1st
goal within the opening 3 minutes of play. Sarnia regrouped
with Jessie Kozachuk, Sarnia’s keeper, making a brilliant
save but suffering injury in the attempt. With Jessie
briefly out of the game and a substitute goalie in place,
Eastside took advantage and struck again before the 15
minute mark. Windsor was up 2-0 at half time. Although
Sarnia came out strong and fought to keep the game close in
the 2nd half, they were outmatched and in the
last 10 minutes of the game, Windsor soared past Sarnia
driving 3 more goals into the net. It was a tough day for
Sarnia falling by 5 goals to Windsor.
August 14, 2008 Sarnia Spirit vs Waterloo Phoenix - in
Waterloo (1-1)
This
game seemed to be a repeat of the August 7, 2008 match with
Sarnia controlling the ball well with many, many missed
scoring opportunities throughout the game. This time,
however, Waterloo was able to find the back of Sarnia’s net
1st. Although Waterloo thought they could taste
victory, Sarnia snatched it away with a strong corner kick
from Shelby Auterhoff to Nicki Parkes. Nicki converted the
long ball offering a great pass to Nicole Surdyka for the
finish. Nicole scored a brilliant and timely goal. Sarnia
tied the match 1-1 but once again missed a much deserved
win. It was a great game for Sarnia and the girls played
very well as a team.
August 16, 2008 Sarnia Spirit vs London Thunder – in London
(0-1)
London
took the match very late in the 2nd half with a
long ball lobbed over the Sarnia keeper’s head for a
squeaker goal within the last 2 minutes of play. The entire
Sarnia team played tough with some brilliant soccer and
several scoring chances, but it just wasn’t their day. This
game was a heartbreaker but Sarnia looks forward to the
rematch against Thunder on Friday, August 22, 2008 at
Veteran’s field. Sarnia’s defensive line, including
Laurenne D’Esterre, Carly Stamm, Christine Fleisher and
Danielle Quinn had a great game and were recognized for
their outstanding efforts.
August 17, 2008 Sarnia Spirit vs Kitchener Spirit - in
Kitchener (1-3)
Although
Sarnia was faced with injuries and a short bench, they
fought hard against Kitchener and kept the game close.
Sarnia was down by only one goal for the majority of the
game. Nicole Surdyka had a stellar game and scored the lone
goal for Sarnia. A notable highlight was a brilliantly read
penalty kick saved by Sarnia’s keeper, Jessie Kozachuk to
shut down Kitchener. Well done Jesse! The game result was
a loss by 2 goals but a much better game versus the previous
outing against Kitchener earlier in league play. |
