Fury U-11's battle leagues top team

In LDYSL action Monday night the Sarnia Fury U-11 Premier team played against the 1st place North London Hotspurs in London. On a very hot evening with only 11 players the Fury team looked to get in the way of the powerful London team. Starting the game with a new defensive formation the Sarnia boys did a great job of staying with the constant attack of the Hotspurs. The back line of Josh MacDonald, Trever Forsten, Justin Fazio and Zack Hall did a great job clearing the ball when they could get to it and battling every time it was a 50/50 ball.

Christiano Pagotto and Franco Sproviero made up the next line of defence and did a great job cutting off passes and making smart plays with the ball the entire game. Owen Gibson was making his first start in goal and did his very best to get some part of his body on each shot he faced. The mid-field trio of Keith Manery, Troy Hall and John Anthony Filia combined to both cover defensively and generate something offensively. Sawyer Osborne was the lone forward and did his best to be where he was needed at all times. They took the job seriously enough that they managed to manufacture a couple of good scoring chances. John Anthony had an excellent opportunity mid way through the first half getting great contact on the ball from about 20 yards out. The Hotspurs goalie made a very good save on the shot. The score at half time was 3-0 for London but each member of the Sarnia team felt very good about their efforts.

The second half saw the London team continue its attack. The heat and the efforts of the Sarnia team started to show in their legs as London seemed to find more space to move the ball. The Fury goal crease was a very busy area and Owen Gibson did his best, he made a couple of really good reaction saves and a good job moving the ball.

The highlight of the game saw a penalty shot awarded to the Hotspurs team after Trever Forsten did what he had to and took a man down inside the 18 yard box while battling for the ball. The Fury goal tender made the save on the initial penalty shot and was able to scramble and come up with the rebound as well. This seemed to energize the Sarnia team a little and few moments later were rewarded at the other end of the field with a couple of corner kicks as a result of their hard work. Franco Sproviero and Justin Fazio combined on the first one, the result being a beautiful cross that was well challenged inside the 6 yard box and knocked out of bounds for the second corner kick. This time Franco and Christiano Pagotto combined to get a chance at goal, Pagottos' shot was stopped in front and landed on the foot of Justin Fazio. Fazio was able to push the ball back out to Franco who connected with a solid shot only to have it hit the side meshing of the goal.

A bunch of exhausted Fury players were relieved when the final whistle went. London scored more in the second than they did in the first but that did not seem to bother the Sarnia players, they knew that they had done their very best against a very good team. Sarnias' next game is against Woodstock next Monday Aug. 25th in Woodstock.
