MISSISSAUGA – The Sarnia Sting gave the
seventh ranked team in the Canadian
Hockey League, all they could handle and
then some on Friday night.
But in the end the Mississauga St.
Michael’s Majors held on for a 3–2
victory over the Sting before only 1,689
fans at the Hershey Centre.
The loss was Sarnia’s fourth in a row
and saw their over all record fall to
13-21-1-1 in the Ontario Hockey League.
Mississauga improved to 23-6-3-1 and is
now 13-2-1-1 on home ice.
The Sting returns home tonight to host
the Brampton Battalion beginning at 7:35
p.m. at the RBC Centre. Sarnia will
then be off until December 29th
when the Plymouth Whalers come to town.
Last night’s game was close from start
to finish as the teams were tied 1-1
after the first period, while the Majors
led 2-1 after the second period.
It was also the sixth straight game in
which the Sting has scored only two
goals.
“You
have to be happy with the effort
tonight,” said Sting head coach Dave
MacQueen. “But it is that same old
story that we can’t score. We did a
good job of holding a pretty good hockey
team to just three goals.”
The Majors opened the scoring at 9:41 of
period one when Jordan Mayer scored on a
power play beating goalie Adam
Courchaine with a high shot from the
slot.
Sarnia tied the game at 16:18 when Kale
Kerbashian notched his team high 12th
goal, knocking in a rebound off a point
shot from Nathan Chiarlitti.
St. Michael’s regained the lead just
over a minute into the second period
when Casey Cizikas scored on a partial
breakaway.
What turned out to be the winning goal
came three minutes into the third period
when T. J. Battani tipped in a point
drive with Courchaine having no chance.
Sarnia pulled to within a goal with 11
minutes remaining when Jordan Hill
scored his fourth of the year drilling
home a high slap shot.
But that would be it for the Sting as
Majors goalie J.P Anderson closed the
door the rest of the way.
MacQueen was incensed with a last minute
icing call on his team even though
Sarnia was short handed.
“There was only a few seconds left, but
that’s why we had two guys go hard into
their zone. Who knows what might have
happened, but it was a bad call.”
The Sting started the game one player
under the limit, as defenceman Anthony
Donati did not make the trip due to a
lower body injury. They then lost
forward Ben O’Quinn in the second period
with an upper body injury.
Mississauga held a 34-27 edge in shots
on goal. Each team was one for six on
the power play.
MacQueen hopes his team can end their
losing streak tonight.
“I
told the players after the game to keep
their heads up because they came with a
strong work ethic tonight. They need to
bring that same into the game with
Brampton. It’s not going to be easy as
Brampton hasn’t played since Wednesday.”

- Cizikas
was the first star, while Hill (who had
a goal and an assist) was second star
and Battani third star.
- Sarnia’s
road record is now 6-12-0-1
- Former
Sting first round draft pick Gregg Sutch
played in only his 11th game of the
season for the Majors due to injuries.
He has just two assists so far. Sutch
was traded to St. Michael‘s in the off
season.
