Pt Edward Atoms Close Out Year
with Tournament Championship
The Point Edward Atom
Blackhawk’s played in the John Henry Memorial Tournament
in Strathroy during the Christmas break and came away
with the gold winning all three of their games. Bailey
Reinders and the defense played well as they only
allowed one goal in all three of their games.
Blackhawk’s vs
Predators
The Point started the
tournament against a league rival in the Lambton Shores
Predators and they knew they had their hands full. Both
teams started the tournament fighting hard for the puck
to get the crucial first goal. The Hawks defense played
well in not letting the Predators anywhere near their
net. With two minutes left in the period, the Hawks made
a rush from their own zone and Terpstra made an
excellent pass to Canie to give the Point a 1-0 lead
going into the second period.
The second period had both
teams getting some good scoring opportunities and the
action was fast and end-to-end. The Blackhawk’s had some
very close calls but couldn’t capitalize to extend their
lead. Late in the period the Hawks ran into penalty
trouble but the Predators couldn’t take advantage of the
extra man and the score remained at 1-0 going into the
third.
The third period saw the
Hawks take control of the game. Terpstra had a good
scoring opportunity off an Edlington rebound but it went
wide of the net. Mid way through the third period, Caley
made an excellent defensive play to get the puck and
drove it down the ice to put it in the top hand corner
of the net to give the Hawks a bit of a cushion with a
2-0 lead. The Predators seem to lose a bit of their legs
and the Point took advantage with Edlington scoring two
more goals before the game ended to give them a 4-0 win.

Blackhawk’s vs Glencoe
The second game of the
tournament saw the Hawks play a team they have never
seen before in Glencoe. The Point got off to an early
start when Noah Best passed to an open Jett Terpstra
five seconds into a power play and he made it count to
give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. As the period continued, the
crowd knew it was going to be a very close game. The
period ended 1-0 for the Hawks.
The second period saw good
end-to-end action as both teams fought hard for the
puck. Both teams defense played the man well and never
allowed any clear scoring opportunities. The Hawks ended
the period on a power play but couldn’t capitalize and
it ended 1-0 for the Point.
Not until mid-way through
the third period, could the Point extend their lead.
Garrett Kennedy set up Mackenzie Caley to extend the
Point’s lead to 2-0. A minute and a half later Best set
up Edlington to make it 3-0 and put the game out of
reach for Glencoe and the Hawks were off to the
Championship game the next morning.

Blackhawk’s vs Rockets
The Championship game saw
two teams who knew each other very well from
Lambton-Middlesex league action as the Blackhawks played
the Strathroy Rockets. Both teams came out wanting the
gold and the Hawks came out strong. The Rockets had a
weak moment in the middle of the first that saw the
Hawks get two goals by Best and Canie within 30 seconds
of each other to take a commanding 2-0 lead. The Rockets
settled down and continued to play the Hawks hard as the
period ended at 2-0.
The second period saw Point
Edward continue the pressure as Best made it 3-0 within
the first minute of the period from a Kaeden Canie pass.
The Rockets broke Reinders tournament shout-out as they
retaliated within a minute to make it 3-1. As in the
previous period, the Rockets lost their focus in the
middle of the period and the Hawks Jett Terpstra and
Nathan Edlington let them pay as they both scored to
extend the Point’s lead to 5-1 going into the third.
The third was pretty tight
playing and neither team could muster up a goal and the
game ended 5-1.
The Point Edward Atoms play
their next game January 9th at home versus
the Lucan Irish.
