Point Edward Hawks Come Away With
Two Wins in Double Header
In the first of a couple of
league double headers the Hawks have to play this
season, the Point Edward Atoms pulled out four points
for the win column as they beat Mt Brydges Blue 4-2 in
the morning and then came home to win against the
Strathroy Red team 8-4.
Mt Brydges Cougars Blue
This was the second meeting
of these two teams so they both knew what to expect.
Both teams came out digging for the puck and wanting to
get on the board first. Reinders played excellent
between the pipes to keep the Hawks in a 0-0 game. With
one minute left in the period, the Cougars took
advantage of a weak defensive play by yhe Point to take
a 1-0 lead, but the Hawks quickly retaliated when Nathan
Edlington scored just before the period ended to make it
a 1-1 game going into the second.
The second saw some great
end-to-end action with both teams skating hard. Both
teams had scoring opportunities early in the period but
couldn’t get a goal against some awesome goaltending. At
the four minute mark of the period, Jett Terpstra made a
zone clearing pass to Matt Laframboise who took it down
the ice for a breakaway and put the puck in the right
top corner of the Cougars net to make it 2-1 for the
Point to end the second.
Both teams began the third
playing hard, as this game could still be won by either
team. Similar to the second periods play, the third was
end-to-end action with both teams getting good scoring
chances. Midway through the third, the Cougars tied the
game on a Point Edward weak moment but this seemed to
spark the Hawks as they countered shortly thereafter
with goals by Jason Caley and Jett Terpstra to end the
game 4-2 for the Point.

Strathroy Rockets Red
The second game didn’t see
the Hawks slow up a bit. Two and a half minutes into the
first period and with the Hawks charging, Noah Best made
an excellent cross ice pass to an open Nathan Edlington
who one timed it to open the scoring for the Point. The
first saw a fast paced game with both teams getting
scoring opportunities. The team of Best and Edlington
teamed up again when Best banged in a goal in front of
the Rockets net to make it 2-0. The Hawks seemed to find
their stride and shortly thereafter Caley made it 3-0
off Kennedy and Young passes to end the first and take a
commanding lead.
The Rockets came out
aggressive in the second period as Reinders had to make
a few sprawling saves to keep them from scoring. The
Rockets aggressiveness paid off, as they were able to
get a goal three minutes into the period. The Hawks
didn’t lose their focus as Best and Edlington teamed up
again to get two goals late in the period to make it
5-1.
The third period saw the
toll of two games hit the Hawks as the Strathroy Rockets
came out charging and were able to get three unanswered
goals in the first five minutes of the period to make it
5-4. The Point were able to regain their composure and
extend their lead to 6-4 when Edlington got his
hat-trick midway through the third. Their defensive play
improved which prevented Strathroy from getting close to
Reinders in net. Best and Edlington weren’t finished for
the game as Best got his hat-trick and Edlington got his
fourth of the game to end it 8-4 for the Point.
The Point’s next game is
Saturday November 21st at 5pm in the Point
versus East Lambton.
