Mooretown, ON
– The Mooretown Flags played a full 60 minutes
according to Head Coach
Bruce
Aberhart, and it got them their first win of the
season with a 5-1 victory over the Blenheim Blades.
"We
finally started putting it together tonight," said
Aberhart. "We played a full 60 minutes tonight. Our
penalty kill was very good tonight. We had a couple
of 5 on 3's and we killed them both off, and I think
that set the tone for the game."
Mooretown
got on the scoreboard first with Michael Gray
scoring his first of the season It would be followed
later on in the period by a goal form Dan Lumley,
who knocked in a puck sitting on the goal line after
Kurtis Glowa put the puck on net.
Blenheim
would get one back before the end of the period as
Ben Campbell picked up a loose puck in front of
goalie Andrew Ganter, but it would be Blenheim's
only goal for the rest of the game.
Mooretown's offence in the second period came out
firing, as the Flags missed on many chances either
wide or hitting the post, including a Mike Burns
shot that got under the arm of the Blenheim
netminder, hit the post and slide across the goal
line and out the side of the net.
But soon
after Caden Fleming would get one by throwing a
backhand on net that got through a crowd in front
and beat a screened Brandon Cowell to make it a 3-1
game after two periods.
In the
third, the chances for the Flags continued as they
moved the puck well. Spencer Bronzi would pick up
his first of the season, coming in over the blue
line and moving into the slot and firing a wrist
shot over Cowell's shoulder to make it a 4-1 game.
Michael
Gray would also pick up his second of the game after
Josh Teschke got a pass across to him while falling
to finish off the Flags scoring for the night.

The first
victory of the season is an improvement over their
first two losses says Aberhart.
"When we
had a lead tonight, we knew how to protect it. The
last two games last weekend we built up the lead and
let them chip away at it, then eventually its tied
and they go up. Tonight the difference was we
protected the lead, we figured out how to do it, and
we went out and executed."
Just three
games into the season, the Flags are 1-2-0, and a
lot of new faces in the dressing room is a factor in
the early losses. Building team chemistry and
continuity is something Aberhart says, the Flags
will continue to work on going forward.
"We put 12
new kids in the line up, they are all talented
hockey players, it is just getting that cohesion
between them," he said. "I think you saw that a
little tonight. All four lines played well together,
the defensive pairings are starting to come together
and understanding each other. It's a growing
process."
Mooretown
will be back in action Sunday afternoon in
Kingsville.
