Alvinston, ON
– The Alvinston Indians travelled to Fingal on
Thursday evening for game 5 of the St. Thomas &
District Major Fastball League Playoff Championship.
The winner would be the league champ for 2011.
Things
started well for the Storm when Chris Payne clubbed
a 2 run homer in the opening stanza. This came after
the Indians left the bases loaded in their half of
the first inning, but in the second inning, with two
out, Andy Triest reached base after a bunt, stole
second base, and scored on a game tying 2 run homer
by Joe Triest.
In the
third, Alvinston took the lead on a solo homerun by
Chris Drew to lead off the inning. With a 3-2 lead,
Brad Young went to work in the middle innings for
Alvinston, allowing only one hit in the next three
innings.
In the
sixth, Andy Triest reached base via another bunt
with one out, stole second base again, and scored on
a clutch 2 out RBI single by Jamie Shields, making
it 4-2. Joe Triest went in to run for Shields the
catcher with two out, and stole second base, and
then scored on another timely 2 out single by Drew.
Jeff Ingram reached base via an error for Alvinston,
and then Young executed the suicide squeeze scoring
Drew, for an all-important 6-2 lead.
Young went
to work again in the sixth allowing only one hit,
and then in the seventh St. Thomas did muster one
run, but the Indians cruised to the title, with a
6-3 final.
Young was
the story on the mound going the distance for
Alvinston, spreading 5 hits and 1 walk over 7
innings of work, to capture the win, and the series
clinching victory, fanning 11 St. Thomas swingers.
On the offence, Joe and Andy Triest, Shields, and
Drew, made the offence jive, in winning their 6th
St. Thomas & District Major Fastball League
Championship.
The
Indians finished their season with a 45-19 record
