Sarnia, ON
– High school athletics returned for the
2011-2012 school year, and boys volleyball got LSSAA
started. In senior boys volleyball action, St.
Christopher's travelled to SCITS and defeated the
Blue Bombers 3-0 in straight sets to open their
season.
St.
Christopher's, who was the runner up last season to
St. Clair for the LSSAA Championship, got off to a
quick start in the first set, as Jamie Vandenberg
served up nine service points including five aces to
help push the Cyclones to an early 9-1 lead in the
first set.
The
Cyclones would control the first set keeping ahead
of the Bombers by double their score. SCITS in the
first set had control issues, and failed to get kill
set ups and have the Cyclones many free balls. The
Cyclones would take the first set 25-9.
The second
set began with Austin Spearman leading the Cyclones
to 11 straight points of his service before he put
it into the net to lose serve. But the single point
didn't stop St. Chris, as Vandenberg score six
straight points to put the Cyclones well ahead in
the second set. SCITS would get a run of five
points, but the Cyclones were to powerful in the
second set and took it 25-7.
The final
set saw the Blue Bombers keep it close early on,
even taking a lead before the Cyclones continued
their dominate net play. Kwin Hemsley had two kills
and an ace in the third set, while David French
served for five straight points, as the Cyclone
closed out the third set with a 25-13 win.
With the
3-0 victory over the Bombers, St. Christopher's
begins where they left off last year, as the
Cyclones look to return to the LSSAA Championships.
Cyclone Head Coach Frank Brennan was pleased with
his teams successful, but feels his inexperienced
team can put in a good season.
"I'd like
to see us hitting harder," Brennan said. "We are a
bit inexperienced team but we are starting to get
hang of what to do."
A major
part of the victory over SCITS was the service of
the Cyclones. A role that hadn't figured heavily
into last years Cyclone team, but could be a source
of generating points this season.
"If the
serves are there it is going to be a good thing if
they get in," he said. "You can win by the serve and
you can also lose by the serve."
To make
the finals again, Brennan believes his team needs to
continue to improve, much like last years team did
over the the course of the season. And while it is
still the first week of the season, the Cyclones are
poised to make another deep run in senior boys
volleyball this year.
