Sarnia, ON
– Sarnia Lady Sting Bantam A’s are 3 for 3 in
pre-season play. The Sting met the Bluewater Hawks
and won their first exhibition game September 6th at
the RBC Centre, with a score of 3-2. September 11th
brought their second win in Michigan at Compuware
Arena with a score of 2-1.
Sting came up against Detroit September 12th at The
RBC Centre. As Detroit hit the ice, The Sting had to
take note of the accuracy and strength they
displayed. This would be a battle.
Detroit had 2 shots on the Sarnia net in the first
minute of play. The first period brought 3 penalty
kills for the Sting and only 1 for Detroit. The
Sting fought hard to ice the puck and stay with the
Detroit skaters. Net minder, Naomi Dubs, shut
Detroit down repeatedly. Shots were lopsided 12/2
against Sting. End of 1, scoreboard is dormant at
0-0.
Second period play lit up the score board with
Detroit taking 3 penalties to give the Sting power
play chances.
Sarnia out skated and out shot Detroit 20 to 5 this
period. The orange and blue goalie saw a lot of
black coming her way with rampant shots on net from
the line. Sting defense introduced themselves via
wrist shots and slap shots throughout the period.
The Sting made use of 1 power play opportunity with
a back hand over the head of Detroit goalie with 18
seconds on the clock. Sarnia goal by Ansley
Harrison, assists by Kristin Parkes and Aleah
Boersma. End of two, score 1-0 Sting
Sting came back on the ice looking tired and flat
footed, taking 4 penalties in the first 8 minutes.
Play was largely in the Sting end the first half of
the period. Shots on net reflected this in favour of
Detroit 10 shots to 4. Net minder Ashley Norland
played equal time to end the game with the force
needed to shut down power play chances. The Sting
were unable to defend a 5 on 3 attack, giving
Detroit a goal to tie the game at 1 near middle of
the third. Black and yellow fought back with speed
and persistence, bothering Detroit skaters at every
angle.
Naomi
Watts rushed the Detroit net with a quick back hand
with 7 minutes left in the game. The goal was
assisted by passes up the ice from Aleah Boersma and
Bryanne Roberts, bringing the Sting back to a much
earned lead. Detroit attempted to fight back, but
had little left in the tank. Pulling their goalie
gave Sarnia an empty net goal to finish the game.
MackenzieWilson and Naomi Watts assisted while
Bryanne Roberts glided the puck into the vacant net
to make the end of game score 3-1 Sting.
Lady Sting meet up with Bluewater Hawks again this
Sunday at Gemini Arena in Strathroy at 2:30 pm.
