Sarnia, ON
– It was opening weekend for the Lambton AAA Minor
Midget Sting, as they took on the Cambridge Jr.
Hawks at the RBC Centre Saturday afternoon, but came
up short with a 4-3 loss, despite leading after the
first.
The Sting
had not played much together before this game, but
jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after Adam
Craievich moved in on a breakaway and beat Hawks
goalie Scott Patton high on the glove side to give
Lambton the 1-0 lead.
The lead
would be short lived, as the Hawks had multiple
scoring chances after the Sting goal, and finally
Andrew Ellis would put in the Hawks first after a
scramble in front to tie the game at 1-1.

Lambton
would retake their lead before the end of the first,
as Ryan Verbeek is fed a pass from Matt Doidge in
the slot, and he bangs it passed Patton to put the
Sting up 2-1 after the first.
Unfortunately that lead didn't last the first minute
of the second period, as Jasson DaSilva scores 29
seconds into the period to knot the game back up at
2-2. Lambton would go scoreless in the period as the
lack of chemistry between the lines began to show as
the game went deeper.
The Hawks
would strike again to take their first lead of the
game, as Quinn Diamond made it 3-2 with a wrist shot
over goalie Cole George glove.
In the
third, Lambton would respond faster then the Hawks
did the period before, as Verbeek would get his
second of the game on another breakaway, shooting
high to tie the game up again at 3-3.
Cambridge
would respond quickly in the period to retake their
lead, as Alex Mutton picks up a rebound off George's
pads, and put it into the open cage for a 4-3 lead.
Lambton
would press for the equalizer, even pulling their
goalie, but were unable to break into the zone
enough to sustain a constant pressure and scoring
chance, and came up short in a 4-3 loss.

"it's
early in the season, a lot of the boys haven't
played together," said Head Coach David Craievich.
"It's going to take some time for them to get the
chemistry on the ice, in the dressing room, and
we'll have a much stronger performance."
Lambton
had 30 shots on net as did the Hawks. The Sting
though have team building to work on over the next
couple of weeks, as Craievich notes, starting the
team from scratch, there is a lot of parts to the
game the team will need to work on, which includes
confidence in passing to their team.
"There is
a lot of technical parts of the game we got to work
on, tightening up the defensive side of the puck
versus always trying to score goals and prove you
can score goals. There is a lot more to hockey then
that."
Craievich
believes the Sting will have a successful season if
they tighten up the defence.
"This team
will have one heck of a hockey season," he said. "A
lot of talent, a lot of new faces, a lot of ability
to do a lot. But like any sport, its a team game,
and we play together as a team. Hopefully through
the first part of the season we can bring that glue
together, and come together as a unit and find a way
to start winning and developing further and further
beyond that."
Lambton
continues this weekend with a game Sunday against
Huron Perth.
