Flags put up ten in final preseason victory
Andrew Brethauer September 8th, 2011

Mooretown, ON – It may have been a preseason game, but the ten goals the Mooretown Flags put up against the Wallaceburg Lakers in a 10-3 victory Thursday night showcased the new fire power of the Flags, as well as some returning power.

Mooretown came out firing against the Lakers, throwing shot after shot on net, but none would trickle passed. After the Flags took a penalty, the Lakers would capitalize on a 3-on-2 rush, scoring the games first goal and take a 1-0 lead. But it didn't take long for the Flags to respond back, as Cody Schmidt would dig the puck out from a crowd in front of the net, and eventually get it passed the Lakers goalie to tie the game.

The Flags would then take advantage of their own powerplay, as Matt Brandon would blast a low point shot into the net to give the Flags the lead which they never would look back from, as Mooretown took the early 2-1 lead after the first.

In the second, Mooretown would play in front of the net, scoring the majority of their goals with passes into the slot. Aaron Schieman would pick up a rebound point shot in the slot and put it in the back of the net to make it 3-1. Quickly after Ryan Hunt would find Kyler Constantine in front of the net to make it 4-1. Michael Gray would add two goals in front of the goalie, to put the Flags up 6-1 before the Lakers would finally get one back.

But Mooretown wasn't finished, as Dan Lumley would fight for a puck in front of the net, and score the Flags fifth goal of the period to give them a 7-2 lead after two periods of play.

In the third while on a powerplay early, Constantine would pick up his second of the game off a rebound. After a Lakers goal, Schmidt would add his second of the game, and Jeff Schroeter would add one last goal, as the Flags score ten in the victory.

"I thought we played well, we definitely moved the puck around really well," said Mooretown Head Coach Bruce Aberhart. "For really the second time most of these kids have been together, it looks like we got something to build on."

Mooretown and Wallaceburg met a week earlier in which the Flags put up nine goals. Wallaceburg was the division champions last season, but have gone through shake ups in the front office and on the ice, resulting in a much younger team.

"I know Wallaceburg has to go through a few things, and I don't really think they have shown us their full line up yet," said Aberhart. "You take things with a grain of salt at this time of year. We got a good look at a few kids tonight and it will help us make up our mind on them.

Mooretown finished in second behind Wallaceburg last season and with added talent locally and from across the river, the Flags could have a good season ahead of them. But Aberhart cautions about getting ahead this early, before the season even begins.

"We are all equal right now. If things progress the way we normally progress through the season, we get stronger and stronger as the season goes on, we'll see around Christmas time where we stand."

Returning to the Flags was Josh Teschke, Aaron Schieman and Mike Burns, while new talent includes goalie Seth Hellinga, who played the first two periods, and forward Dan Lumley, both of which played together on the St. Clair Colts LSSAA championship hockey team.

Also new are American's Kyler Constantine and Cody Schmidt who the flags hope to sign in the next week before the regular season begins.

Mooretown opens their season against the defending Junior C Champions Belle River on Saturday, September 17th.
