Major Atom
Sting AAA take 3 of 4 Points on Weekend
special to sarniasports October 24, 2011
The
Lambton Sting Major Atoms came away with a
win and tie from their home and home series
with the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs over the
weekend. The two teams played to a 6-6 tie
at the RBC Centre on Saturday before the
Sting rebounded the next day with an
impressive 2-0 shutout victory on the road.
Saturday's game
featured plenty of offense from both teams
especially in a wild third period that saw 7
goals scored as the Sting rallied to earn
the tie after falling behind 6-4 with six
minutes remaining in the game. Dylan
Riddell scored twice for Lambton with
singles going to Carson Perry, Jaycob White,
Nolan DeGurse and Josh McLean. DeGurse and
McLean each had 3 helpers with Hunter
Monkhouse and Spencer Vandenboom getting one
assist each. Luc Thorne-Smith earned the
tie in net for the Sting.
On Sunday the
Sting carried the play to Elgin-Middlesex
right from the opening whistle and were
rewarded with the game's first goal midway
through the first period when Nolan DeGurse
jammed in a loose puck following a goalmouth
scramble. Dylan Riddell and Josh McLean
drew assists on the play. The Sting would
add an insurance marker early in the third
on a nifty deflection by Brock Barber off of
a Jaxon Shelton point shot. Ryleigh
Vanderwal also picked up an assist on the
play. Liam McCarthy notched his third
shutout of the season and while he was not
tested often he did come up with some big
saves in the third period to prevent the
Chiefs from gaining any momentum.
