Alvinston, ON –
The Alvinston Flyers could have been in a tie for
first place with the Mooretown Flags in the North
Division with a victory over the Essex 73's. But
after a tied regulation, the Flyers would not score
in a shootout and fall 7-6 at home in Jr. C hockey.
Essex
opened the scoring in the first as Brett Beattie got
the 73's only goal of the period 2:08 into the game.
From there the Flyers would take over, and utilize
the powerplay. Connor Thompson and Chris Edwards
would each pick up three points in the period, as
Thompson scored a powerplay goal to tie the game,
and Edwards would get the third goal of the period
for the Flyers. Both would assist on Dan Warner's
goal, as the Flyers lead 3-1 after the first.
The second
though would be a reverse of the third, as the 73's
would return with three of their own. Tyler
Pope-Ferguson would start it on the powerplay to
bring the 73's to within one. Chad VanEyk would
restore the two goal lead, but just over a mintute
later Zack Miletic would cut it back down to one
goal, and Brian Hamlin would complete the comeback
with his late third period goal, as the game headed
to the third tied at 4-4.
In the
third, Essex continued their run of goals, putting
in their fourth straight goals, as Chad Hedrick
added the first of the period, and Pope-Ferguson got
his second of the game for a 6-4 lead.
This time
the Flyers would be the ones to play catch up, and
would find in answer on the stick of Brett Dalton
who would score each of Alvinston's final two goals
to send the game into overtime and shootouts.
In the
shootouts, Dalton, Joe Archer and Dan Warner were
each stopped, but Kevin Boggs would get the second
shot for Essex through in what would be the deciding
goal.
James
Morreau made 40 saves in the overtime loss.
Chris
Edwards had a big night for the Flyers picking up a
goal and four assists, while Connor Thompson also
picked up three points.
Alvinston
will travel to Mooretown on Saturday to play the
Flags in a battle for first place in the North
Division.
