andrew brethauer October 22nd, 2011

Sarnia, ON – It was a battle on Brock Street, as the Sarnia Legionnaires needed overtime for their eight straight win, defeating the Leamington Flyers 5-4 in Junior B hockey.

"We played well tonight, again we out chances them," said head coach Dan Rose. "The four goals they got were all off bad plays by us. It was not that they were out working us, we made some bad plays at times tonight and turned the puck over."

Alex Seguin got the scoring started in the first for the Flyers, but with two quick Legionnaires goals from Daniel Nikandrov and Brent Sauve, the Legionnaires took the 2-1 lead. But with 32 seconds left in the period, Brian Johnson would knot it up at 2-2 after the first period.

Sarnia would retake the lead as Evan Dixon scored on the powerplay for a 3-2 Legionnaires lead. With a 5 on 3 powerplay, Sarnia would give up a shorthanded goal as Leamington ties the game again. But with seven seconds remaining, Jason Teschke would put Sarnia back in front 4-3.

In the third, the Flyers would tie it again as Seguin got his second of the night. Both teams would have chances to score in the third, but the game would need overtime.

In overtime, the Legionnaires would get on the powerplay. With a scramble in front, Daniel Nikandrov would score his second of the game, as the puck gets up over Flyers goal Darien Ekblad, and put into the net for the game winner.

Kyle Washer made 34 saves for his seventh win of the season.

Sarnia was playing without Nathan Mater and Justice Dundas who had been called back up to the Sarnia Sting due to injuries on the Sting team. With the Mooretown Flags also in action Saturday night, the Legionnaires looked to the minor midget and midget AAA hockey team and called up Matteo Ciccarelli and Nick Sproviero to fill in.

Also missing was captain Tyler Cicchini who was hurt in Thursday's game, and Mike Dipaolo was also hurt in the Sting's practice.

"We really played well tonight except for four of five times when we made some bad decisions," said Rose. "Those are all correctable mistakes. We are not getting out worked by the other teams. We are out working them, we need to eliminate the mistakes.

The Legionnaires in the middle of playing some of the top teams in the Western Conference, as Sarnia will travel to LaSalle on Wednesday and back home to face St. Thomas on Thursday. It's a perfect time for Sarnia to play the top teams and test their ability and their depth. With eight wins in a row, the Legionnaires have grown fond of winning, and are showing that effort.

"They got a taste of winning now, and they really don't want to lose now," said Rose. "They feel like winners, and now they are willing to put in the work at practice, and it really makes the coaches job easier. They are determined to keep winning."
