Sarnia, ON – Despite the rainy weather conditions, the LSSAA junior boys and girls soccer finals took place Thursday afternoon at St. Christopher's, where both match ups features two games with familiar rivals.

Junior Boys

The finals for the junior boys division would feature the North Lambton Eagles versus the St. Christopher's Cyclones, in a rematch of last years final.

Marco Difederico would start the scoring for the Cyclones, picking up a rebound that was mishandled by Eagles keeper Dalton Goodhill and putting it into the open net for the 1-0 Cyclones lead.

But the lead would not last very long, as David VandenHeuvel would get through the defence and send a kick to the farm side of the net, catching the corner for the 1-1 tie. But the Cyclones would not settle for a tie, and before the half, Darien Primeau would work the ball through three defenders before putting a shot between Goodhill's legs for the 2-1 halftime lead.

The second half was heavily contested as each team looked for their chances. An offside call would bring a Cyclones goal back, but it would only be a matter of time before they would strike again. Joey Eddleston would fire a kick past Goodhill and put the Cyclones up 3-1. Primeau would add a final goal, firing a shot of the post and in to give the Cyclones a 4-1 lead.

St. Chris would take it by the 4-1 score, and capture the junior soccer championship for the fourth straight year.

"After the first 10 to 15 minutes I thought we started passing the ball around a little better," said Cyclones coach Rich Prudom. "We certainly had the chances. If we had made good on some of our chances it might not have been as close. I give credit to North Lambton. They came out with a game plan to try and stifle us."

North Lambton is one of the smaller schools in the LSSAA, and knew coming in it would be a challenge to play the Cyclones.

"We know going into a final like this, we are pretty heavy underdogs," said Eagles coach Derek Arthur. "I found we matched very well with them. The goals they got were late, and it was a very close game right to the end.

St. Chris won last years championship game 1-0 in a shootout.

Junior Girls

Like the boys game, two familiar teams would play once again for the junior girls championship, as Northern would face St. Christopher's in a rematch from last seasons final.

The girls final was marked by excellent goaltending by Riley Wilhelm from St. Chris and Laura Pugsley from Northern. Neither goal allowed a goal in the first half, and made strong saves despite very wet conditions.

St. Chris would open the scoring as Keverly Pike would get a shot on net that would be misplayed by Pugsley and go through her legs and just past he goal line for a 1-0 Cyclones lead.

With the end of the second half drawing close, the Vikings desperatly searched for a game tying goal. Sidney Weiss would provide it in the final minutes, scoring for Northern and sending the game into extra time.

Both schools would score in the extra overime minutes, so a shootout would be needed to solve the 2-2 game.

In the shootout Lauren Wilson, Mackenzie Shuart and Kayleugh Royer would each find the back of the net for the Vikings, as Northern defends their junior girls soccer champion with a 3-2 shootout victory.

Northern defeated St. Chris 3-1 in last years final.
