Goderich, ON – The Petrolia Squires picked up their
first win of the season Friday in Goderich,
defeating the Pirates 9-3.
The
Squires jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the
first three minutes, as Breydan Belan and
Jason McPhail each scored. Goderich would respond on
the powerplay to cut the lead in half, as Mike
Gillen made it a 2-1 game, but the Squires would
restore the two goal first period lead with a goal
from Dan Veenema to make it 3-1. But the penalties
again would cost Petrolia, as Kyle Provily would
make it 3-2 with a powerplay goal.
In the
second, the Squires continued to put pucks in the
net, scoring four times in the period. Scott Hull
had the first goal for the Squires and Jason McPhail
picked up his second of the game, as did Veenema
with a powerplay goal in the middle of the period.
The Pirates would get one back as Josh Gaynor would
score for the third powerplay goal for Goderich. But
the Squires would add one more powerplay goal of
their own, as Mike Gardner makes it a 7-3 game after
two periods.
In the
third, Petrolia would find the back of the net twice
more, as Rob Vanwyseberghe make it 8-3, and Scott
Hull picked up his second of the game to round out
the scroing.
Petrolia
had three two goal scorers and pick up their first
victory of the season. They return to action next
Friday, October 21st against Tavistock.
