On a cold and windy night at the University of Windsor’s Alumni Stadium it was a hard fought game by both teams. Sarnia Northern against the Herman Green Griffins.

Northern opened the scoring with a long single. Herman then marched down the field capping off the drive with a two yard touchdown run the convert was good for a 7-1 lead.  Northern matched the drive with a long touchdown drive of their own to tie up the score.  The convert put Northern ahead 8-7. Herman then marched down to the Northern 18 where their drive was shut down by a stingy Northern defence at that point they punted through the end zone to tie up the game 8-8 at halftime.

Northern scored first in the second half to go ahead 15-8. Northern then added a single on the ensuing kickoff to go ahead 16-8. Both defence’s would tightened up for a long period. Finally with under 3 minutes to go Herman got a touchdown aided by some untimely penalties against Northern. Herman then went for a 2 point convert and the tie. They were successful and the game was knotted up 16-16.

After some good defensive plays Northern got the ball back with about a minute to go on their own 30 yard line. They proceeded to march down the field where with 7 seconds left in the game and the ball on the Herman 22 yard line with no timeouts remaining, they lined up for a field goal. Into a strong headwind the ball barely snuck inside the left upright to give Northern a 19-16 lead with 2.5 seconds left on the clock. Herman had time for one last play and their desperation pass was incomplete and Northern had eked out a hard fought 19-16 win over last year’s Western Bowl champs.

Northern now moves on to play next week in London against a yet undetermined opponent for the chance to play in the Western bowl.
