Lancers win second of season with late victory on Vikings
andrew brethauer November 23rd, 2011

Sarnia, ON - Josh Moore scored twice in a 3-2 victory for the LCCVI Lancers over the Northern Vikings in LSSAA boys hockey from Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams are very familiar with each other, as Northern and LCCVI have met in the finals nine of the last 10 seasons except for last season.

Moore started the scoring in the game on the powerplay, sending a low shot on net that beat Vikings goalie Brandon Johnson for the early 1-0 lead. But the Vikings would find the equalizer in the period, as a shot from the point would find the back of the net, with Brandon Basso picking up the goal and tying the game.

In the second, Northern would take their first lead in the game, as Justin Moore would steal the puck at the Lancers blue line and walk in alone, beating Lancers goalie Spencer Krall with a deke for a 2-1 Northern lead.

But Josh Moore would score his second of the game, picking up a pass in the slot, and firing a wrist shot into the back of the net to square the game 2-2 after two periods of play.

In the third, both teams would have numerous shots go off the post and going just wide. Frank White would score what would be the gamer winner, after a shot on net gets through the pads of Johnson, and sat in the crease behind him, allowing White to have the easy put in, as the Lancers take it 3-2.

"I thought we did a real good job of forechecking. That's a strong point of our game," said Lancers coach Bob Gould. "If you play in their end of the rink they have trouble getting chances. All and all it was a good high school hockey game."

Both teams were missing players from their line up due to other LSSAA sports still going on. LCCVI is started the season 2-0 after a victory over St. Clair to start the year. The Colts eliminated the Lancers last year to reach the finals and eventually win the Lambton Cup. This season, the Lancers look to get back to the finals.

"Right now, everyone is still trying to find out what their team is like," said Gould. "I don't think their is a clear favourite. With only five teams, you don't have too many times you can take a night off."

Northern starts the season 0-1 and will be back in action Monday against SCITS. Northern is still in the process of building their team and getting their lines together.

"We are still in the process of developing and picking our team," said Vikings coach Joe Bronzi. "We want to battle hard and have a good hard work ethic. Once we get our team situated we will be good to go and get a game system going."
