andrew brethauer November 2nd, 2011

Sarnia, ON - With one day left to go in the LSSAA season, any final push for position in the playoffs will need to be made on Thursday. Tuesday's action had basketball and volleyball headline the day, as 11 match ups were played between the two sports.

Northern vs St. Patrick's

Northern swept the Irish in their three games on Tuesday, picking up a 65-23 victory in junior girls basketball and a 55-26 victory in senior girls basketball. The junior victory moves the Vikings into third place with a 4-3 record, and two points behind St. Clair for second. The Vikings Split the season series with St. Clair 1-1 and will likely see them in the first round of the playoffs.

The senior girls are still on top of the girls division, and will play SCITS on Thursday, looking to remain in the driver seat heading into the playoffs.

Northern also had a 3-0 victory over St. Patrick's in junior boys volleyball, winning 25-23, 25-19, 25-16. With the victory Northern stays in pace with SCITS for the final playoff spot in the junior ranks. The two teams will play on Thursday with the winner heading to the playoffs. Northern holds a 3-0 victory over the Bombers earlier in the season, so SCITS will need to win 3-0 to avoid a tie-breaker if needed.

St. Clair vs St. Christopher

Both the Colts and Cyclones are involved in every playoff picture, sitting #1 and #2 in junior girls basketball and junior boys volleyball. On Tuesday St. Chris took the advantage in junior girls basketball with a 38-19 victory, continuing their perfect 7-0 season, while St. Clair ends the year at 5-3, two points ahead of Northern.

In junior boys volleyball, the Colts won 2-1 with 25-17, 15-10 set victories, and a 23-25 set loss. Both teams had identical 11-1 records coming into the game, and with the victory St. Clair will take first spot heading into the playoffs, while St. Chis will look to take on St. Francois-Xavier in the opening round. The Colts will wait out the winner of Northern and SCITS for their first round match up.

In senior action, the girls basketball team sits with a 7-3 record, and in third place after a 44-40 loss to the Cyclones. St. Clair will take on either St. Chris or Northern in the first round after Thursday's match ups decide the positioning. And in boys volleyball, St. Chris edged out 2-1 victory after losing the first 9-25, and coming back with 25-22, 25-21 set victories. St. Clair has a 6-3 record heading into Thursday, while the Cyclones had a 7-3 record. Both teams will meet each other again in the first round of the playoffs.

SCITS vs LCCVI

With a 3-0 victory over the Lancers Tuesday, SCITS has given themselves a chance to make it into the junior boys volleyball playoffs. They will just need to beat Northern Thursday to make it in. With a victory on Thursday, LCCVI could as well advance into the playoffs in senior boys volleyball.

LCCVI currently sits in 4th place in junior girls basketball, and will make it into the playoffs with a 2-5 record ahead of St. Patrick's. A meeting with the St. Christopher Cyclones will be in order for their first round playoff. With a victory on Thursday

St. Francois-Xavier vs North Lambton

The Knights and Eagles split in boys volleyball, as the Knights won 3-0 in juniors, 25-19, 25-18, 25-7, moving them 9-4 on the season. St. Francoise will make the playoffs and will look to a St. Christopher first round match up, while North Lambton on the senior side has a 2-7 record after a 3-0 win Tuesday, and has an outside chance to make it into the next round.
