Jr. Colts finalist in SWOSSAA volleyball finals
andrew brethauer November 18th, 2011

Sarnia, ON - The St. Clair Colts reached the finals of the Junior Boys Volleyball Championships, but lost out to the Essex Raiders 3-0 in straight games, losing 25-16, 25-21 and 25-21.

"I thought at times we played with them," said head coach Sue Harrell. "They just had more experience. They did well for being all rookies but one, and I couldn't be happier with the season."

After a first set loss 25-16, the Colts would come out with the lead early in the second match, starting with an ace from Tyler Whitbread. But Essex would rally back and tie the match at 8-8 before overtaking the Colts whose inexperience seem to cost them points as the Raiders built up a seven point lead on St. Clair.

But the Colts would rally back, as Joey Vanderwal would put in three kills, and Jesse Marks one will, as St. Clair would bring themselves to within one, 19-18. Essex would push ahead but the Colts would be fast on their heels and after an ace by Travis Moore, the game was tied at 21-21.

But Essex would continue their strong play, and with a kill by Jeremy Orton, the Raiders would take the second match 25-21, and lead 2-0.

In the third set, the Raiders would jump out to the quick 3-0 lead, but St. Clair would keep it close, tying the match at 8-8. But the Raiders would open up a lead on St. Clair, sparked by a 12 point service from Deen Oozeer, who helped put the Raiders ahead 20-9.

But St. Clair would regroup after a time out and come out scoring. Brett Storr would provide two kills for the Colts, followed by a tip over by Jesse Marks. Storr would continue his excellent play at the net, scoring a tip over and four kills, to put St. Clair just two back of Essex 23-21.

But that would be as close as the Colts would come, as after a Raiders timeout, they would come out and finish off the match with two point, and win the third game 25-21.

Despite not winning SWOSSAA, Harrell is pleased with the effort her young rookie Colts team made all season and that the extra two SWOSSAA games were great experience for the team.

"I didn't think we would make it this far," Harrell said. "I just had one goal in mind to get to the [LSSAA] finals. We did two more big games from that so I can't complain."
