- Sarnia Lady Sting Bantam BB Captures Silver medal
at Waterloo Ravens Fall Challenge Cup .Nov.4-6,
2011.
Game one was against the Peterborough Ice Kats.
Sarnia would open the scoring in the first period
with a hard working goal by Hailey Steinman,
assisted by Darian Nahdee and Karley Roache. Sarnia
held on to the lead until Peterborough responded in
the second period. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
In the second game of the day Sarnia would face the
Aurora Panthers. Sarnia struck first, and scored mid
way though the first on a goal by Suzanne Lockhart,
assisted by Vanessa Wardell. Aurora would respond
with a goal near the end of the first period to tie
the score. Both teams could not capitalize on there
chances over the next two periods, and the game
would remain tied 1-1.
On the second day of the tournament Sarnia was
desperate for a win after two ties, and came up
against the Stoney Creek Sabres. This was a hard
fought game from start to finish with both teams
being penalized for their efforts. Stoney creek
scored near the end of first period to take the
lead. Sarnia responded back near the end of the
second period ,with a goal by Karley Roache deep in
the zone assisted by Christina Devine, and Meghan
Blythe. Sarnia would score again midway through the
third period on a goal by Hailey Steinman, assisted
by Darian Nahdee. Sarnia would hang in for the 2-1
win, on the strength of their goalie Whitney
Simpson.
Sarnia's fourth game of the tournament was against
the home team Waterloo Ravens. The well rested
Ravens came out looking for a win to advance to the
finals. Both teams traded chances, untill early in
the second period when Sarnia captian Averey
Devereaux stepped up, and scored a goal assisted by
Ashley Williams and Samantha Villanueva. Sarnia
would hold onto the 1-0 lead and advance to the goal
medal game. Whitney Simpson recorded the shutout for
Sarnia after stopping numerous scoring chances by
the Ravens.
On Sunday Sarnia would face Peterborough again in a
late afternoon contest. Peterborough would strike
first 30 seconds into the game to put Sarnia on
their heels. Sarnia responded back midway through
the first on a goal by Ashley Williams, assisted by
Addison Smith and Averey Devereaux. Peterborough
would score a minute later to take away any momentum
that Sarnia had started to build up after scoring.
Peterborough would score two third period goals to
win the game 4-1 and capture the gold medal.
Addison Smith was selected as the championship game
M.V.P for Sarnia and received a Ravens tournament
hockey stick for her efforts.
The Sarnia Lady Sting will now continue to defend
their unbeaten streak in League play.
