Storm hold on for Peewee championship victory
andrew brethauer November 5th, 2011

Sarnia, ON - It came down to the end of the game, but the Peewee SMAA Championship football game was close from beginning to end, only to be lost in the final minute of play.

Peewee Final - Storm vs Force

The first quarter was total control by the Force, who used the entire quarter on their first possession, controlling the clock as they moved the ball down field. But despite the ball control, they would give up the ball at the start of the second quarter, and it wouldn't take the Storm long to make something happen with the ball. Matthew Paquette would breaking a tackle and on only the third play of the drive, scamper 80 yards for the touchdown, as the Storm took the early 7-0 lead.

The defensive game would take over, as each team would force the other to go 4 and out. With the clock coming close to an end on the half, the Storm would press for the tying touchdown, driving the ball down to the goal line where Kurtis Hill would bust up the middle for the score. A fail convert attempt would still give the Storm a 7-6 lead going into half time.

At the start of the second quarter, Paquette would break open and look to have a for sure score, but Zachary Bedard would come up with the last man tackle to keep him from breaking free. The Storm would use the long pass and the long run to move down field, and with the ball on the 3 yard line, Paquette would break in for another touchdown, as the Storm lead 13-6 heading into the final quarter.

Paquette would also get it done on defence in the fourth, stripping the ball away and forcing a turnover, but the Force would hold on defence and get the ball back, which would prove costly to the Storm as Hill would again break free for an 35 yard touchdown run on the first play of the drive, as the Force take their first lead of the game 14-13.

But the Force would have continued trouble stopping Paquette, as the running back would retake the lead for the Storm, breaking multiple tackles on his way to a 54 yard touchdown, giving the Storm a 21-14 lead.

With just minutes left in the game, the Force would threaten to score and tie the game. With the ball on the 14 yard line, the Force would call a run play, but a costly fumble would fall into the hands of Anthony Horton of the Storm, turning the ball over. The Storm would kneel to finish off the clock, and take the Peewee Championship, 21-14.
