ANDREW BRETHAUER  November 14th, 2010

In front of their own home crowd, the St. Christopher Cyclones won the LSSAA Junior Girls Basketball finals against the Northern Vikings. The Vikings, who had been undefeated all season suffered their first loss at the wrong time of the season, coming up short with a final score of 42-30 for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones held a four point lead going into the second half, but the Vikings could come back to take the lead after Mackenzie Colbran scored two and added an extra on a foul shot, and Mackenzie Turner stole the ball as the Cyclones came back down the court and proceeded to add two more for a 22-21 lead.

St. Chris would come back with two points from Yasmine Taylor, and a steal and foul for a three point play by Melissa Blair to put the Cyclones up 26-22. Heraid Dunn would two more on foul shots for the Cyclones to push the run to seven points.

Northern would stop the run by adding two, but the Vikings would have foul troubles, and allow Yasmine Taylor to add two on fouls shots. Just before the end of the quarter, Lexi McShea would be fed down low for two points for Northern to keep the Vikings to within three, 29-26.

To start the fourth quarter, the Cyclones would begin to control the tempo of the game, as point guard Yasmine Taylor moved the ball around before driving the lane to put the Cyclones up by five. Northern would be in foul trouble, giving a foul shot to the Cyclones on any foul by the Vikings, and Sydney Cook would add one on a foul shot. The Cyclones would continue their scoring in the fourth, adding another on a fast break by Katie Kernto open the quarter with eight points in a row.

Northern would take a timeout to try and settle the team down, while the Cyclones would come out with a full court press to keep the pressure on the Vikings. Mellissa Ellis would get Northern on the board in the fourth, but a foul by the Vikings would send Katie Kern back to the foul line where she sank two free throws, and Danielle Graham would add one on her own set of foul shots.

The Cyclones continue to move the ball around with a win in their sight, and Graham would add two more on another foul to give the Cyclones a 42-28 lead. Northern would add an extra bucket, but the Cyclones would pass out the rest of the game, and take the championship.

With the win, St. Chris repeats as Junior Girls champions, with their fifth title in the last six years.
