The Lambton
Sting Minor Atom
AAA's enjoyed a
relatively
successful
weekend in
Kitchener as
they advanced to
the semi-finals
of the BlueLine
Tournament
before falling
to the eventual
champion Barrie
Jr Colts in
playoff action.
Lambton opened
the tournament
with a tough
game against the
Waterloo Wolves.
The Sting would
open the scoring
late in the
first period on
a goal from
Nolan DeGurse
with assists to
Ryan Barwitzki
and Greg Ross.
However,
Waterloo would
answer with 2 in
the second and 2
more in the
third period to
win the game by
a 4-1 count.
Next up for the
Sting was
another tough
opponent in
Detroit Little
Caesars. This
time the Sting
fell behind
early and Little
Caesar's carried
a 1-0 lead into
the third
period. With
just over 5
minutes
remaining in the
game Dylan
Riddell would
score a power
play goal to tie
the game.
DeGurse and
Spencer
Vandenboom would
earn the
assists. Two
minutes later
the Sting would
take the lead as
DeGurse scored
with Jaycob
White earning
the assist.
Vandenboom would
add an empty-net
goal in the
final minute to
make the final
score 3-1 for
the Sting.
Saturday morning
the boys
prepared to face
the Guelph Jr
Storm knowing a
victory should
clinch a spot in
Sunday's playoff
round. The Sting
came out flying
and less than 2
minutes into the
game Riddell set
up DeGurse with
the game's first
goal. Guelph
would tie the
game in the
second on a
power play
deflection that
got past Sting
goaltender Liam
McCarthy. That
would be the
only goal
McCarthy and his
defense would
allow in the
game and 2
minutes after
the Storm tied
the contest
Riddell would
put the Sting
back in the
lead. AP call up
Matt McIntyre
would notch his
first point for
the Sting as he
assisted on the
go ahead tally.
DeGurse rounded
out the scoring
with a
shorthanded
marker early in
the third and
the Sting would
once again win
by a 3-1 score.
The final round
robin game
proved
meaningless for
the Sting, as
they learned
beforehand they
had clinched a
playoff spot.
Unfortunately,
the boys played
like it was a
meaningless game
and were
completely
outworked in a
5-0 loss to the
St Catherines
Falcons.
Sunday morning
brought the
Sting their
stiffest
challenge yet in
the tournament
as they faced
the Barrie Jr
Colts. The Sting
worked hard and
never gave up in
the game but it
was clear that
Barrie was a
much stronger
club, at least
on this day. The
final score was
3-0. Although
they came up
short of making
it to the finals
the young Sting
players can be
proud of the
effort they made
over the weekend
and can
hopefully build
on their success
with another
strong showing
next weekend as
they head to
Hamilton for the
Bulldogs
Tournament.
