BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The 2010 season came to a close
Friday night for the Indiana women’s soccer team
(6-12-1, 2-8 Big Ten) with a 3-0 loss to the
Minnesota Golden Gophers (12-5-3, 4-4-2 Big Ten) at
Armstrong Stadium. Five seniors on the Indiana
roster were honored prior to the start of the game
as part of Senior Night.
“It was a tale of two halves tonight for us,”
Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. “They were able
to get a couple quick goals on us but we adjusted at
halftime and played much better in the second half.
Unfortunately we were not able to overcome the early
deficit.”
Minnesota scored first at the 4:29 mark on Steph
Brandt’s sixth goal of the year and then made it 2-0
on Angie Olson’s second goal of the season at the
15:21 mark. Less than ten minutes later the score
read 3-0 in favor of the Gophers thanks to Shari
Eckstrom’s seventh goal of the season.
The Hoosiers best chance came late in the game when
seniors Chloe McKay and Darby Hannon were in on the
Minnesota keeper and McKay corralled a loose ball on
the endline with the keeper out of position.
However, before she was able to get a shot off on
goal she was flagged for offsides.
Freshman goalkeeper Shannon Flower started in goal
and made four saves but did allow those three first
half goals. Senior Lauren Hollandsworth came on at
halftime and made four saves of her own to keep the
Gophers off the board in the second half.
Prior to the start of the game, seniors Leigh Anne
Cummings, Darby Hannon, Lauren Hollandsworth, Chloe
McKay and Jocelyn Moses were recognized for the
outstanding effort and commitment to IU Women’s
Soccer over the past four seasons. They were all a
contributing part to the Hoosiers 2007 run to the
Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament – the best NCAA
Tournament showing in school history.
