Legionnaires pull it out in shootout

LASALLE – The Sarnia Legionnaires pulled one out of the fire here last night.

With just eight seconds left on the clock, coach Dan Rose's Western Ontario Hockey Conference club scored to tie their contest with the LaSalle Vipers at six goals apiece.

Then, in a shootout, the Legionnaires scored twice to skate off with the victory.

The win gave the Sarnians an 11-12-2 record and vaulted them past Chatham into a sixth place tie with the Leamington Flyers. More than that, they are now just three points back of the fifth ranked St. Marys Lincolns.

Back and forth

It was a back and forth struggle from start to finish, with Sarnia falling behind 1-0 in the first period before going into the dressing room with a 2-1 lead. In the second frame, the Vipers took a 3-2 lead, then fell behind 4-3 before squaring matters at 4-4. When the period came to a close, the home team was trailing 5-4.

But LaSalle rallied in the third frame to take a 6-5 lead.

Ferguson scores

Tanner Ferguson, playing his first game after recovering from injuries that had kept him out of 20 contests, tied the match with just eight seconds left.

"The puck was in a scrum, it came out and Tanner teed it up and put it in, high glove, top corner,” Sarnia assistant coach Mike Fleming said afterward.

In the shootout, Braden Kavaratzis and Ilya Arkalov scored for the Legionnaires, offsetting one Vipers score. Arkalov's goal turned out to be the winner.

"He demonstrated great hands,” Fleming said.

Arkalov also scored in regulation time. Officially, he has only one goal this season. But in fact, he actually has three, two of which don't count because they came in shootouts. Nevertheless, those two goals have won two games for the Legionnaires.

Other regulation scorers included Tanner Tomlinson, Kavaratzis, Andy Sokol and Jesse Drydak. Drydak now has a team-leading 12 goals.

· Goalie Mike Reed made 32 saves to get the win. The Legionnaires fired 36 shots on the LaSalle net.

· Kavaratzis, Shawn Waldie and Tomlinson had two assists for Sarnia, while single helpers went to Josh Chapman, Tyler Annett, Derek D'Andrea and Sokol.

· Sarnia is home tonight to the St. Thomas Stars. Game time is 7:10 p.m.
