Braves move to 3-0 with shutout victory

Jeff Jones threw five innings of two-hit baseball and the Sarnia Braves offence knocked out 14 hits as they defeated the Petrolia Raiders 11-0 in WCBL action Monday night. The Braves are off to a 5-0 start to the season, 3-0 in league play, and have allowed only one earned run thus far in 2011.

Jones struck out nine while Lance Hart came on in hitless relief. Sarnia’s pitching did not allow any walks.

Sarnia took a 1-0 lead after one inning and a 2-0 lead after three with Nick Baljeu and James Grant each scoring. The Braves would add two more runs in the fourth with Wade Babula and Baljeu coming around to count. Chris Bright, Grant and Baljeu had early RBI.

Mason McCarthy would add a single run in the fifth inning by crushing his first homerun of the season deep to left field.

The Braves would add three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Babula, Baljeu and Grant, who combined for eigth hits, seven runs and seven RBI, scored in the sixth. Tyler Young, Greg Kemble and Jamie Barron all scored in the seventh. Chris Bright had an RBI but was robbed twice of a base hit by the Petrolia defence. Russ Muhlig also had an RBI along with two hits.

Sarnia plays a tune up game this Wednesday against the Braves Midget team. Anthony Shepherd will be making his first start of the season against his old club. The Braves are on the road taking part in the Tillsonburg Red Sox Tournament this weekend.
