Northern Collegiate - The St. Christopher Cyclones and Northern Vikings captured the LSSAA junior championships in girls and boys rugby Friday afternoon.
In girls rugby, champions St. Christopher took on Northern in a hard hitting match up that saw the Cyclones tackling hard, but also saw the Vikings holding their ground. On two trips to the goal line, the Viking defence held, not allowing the Cyclones to push through. But late in the half, Candace Power punched through the line and get the games first try. Nicole Fox added the convert kick to make it a 7-0 Cyclone lead at the half.
In the second half, the Cyclones continued to put points on the board, as Melissa Giorgi would find open field after two pitches, and burst down field to score the Cyclones second try, making it a 12-0 game.
The Cyclones would provide a big push of the Vikings in a scrum, moving the line ten yards before they picked up the ball and pitched it across to Starling Crawford who found an opening and score another try.
The Cyclones would win the junior girls LSSAA rugby championship 17-0.
In the junior boys final, the Northern Vikings took on the LCCVI Lancers in an evenly matched first half, that saw both teams gain little ground as the physical game was about quickness to the ball early on. The Lancers had the best chance of the first half, sitting right on the doorstep to the goal line, but Northern was able to get to the ball in the Lancers hands and bring down the runners before they would cross the line for a try.
In the second half, Northern would have its own goal line stand, sending wave after wave of bursting players into the Lancers line. But LCCVI made the stop, and held the Vikings outside the goal line.
But Northern would change tactics, and pitch the ball wide, as Dillon Musico would find a one on one situation and score the games first try to make it a 5-0 game.
LCCVI couldn't get close to the Vikings line to score, and Northern's Issac Butler would add another try within the final seconds of the game to give the Vikings a 10-0 victory, and the junior boys LSSAA rugby championship.
