The Alvinston Indians traveled to Fingal on Tuesday night, for a make-up game with the Shedden Mission. Alvinston got to work quick out of the gates, counting three runs in the opening frame. After Joe Triest and Andy Triest both reached base with hits, they scored on Ryan Chapman and Aaron Stocking's hits, who both reached base via errors, making it 2-0 early. Chapman then scored the third run of the inning after an RBI single by Chris Sheppard. In the second inning, Andy Triest singled with two outs, and he was followed by Chris Drew who cranked a two run homerun, widening the Alvinston lead to 5-0.
Shedden's offensive team could not be held quiet however, as Gary Cooke hit a three run homerun for Shedden in their half of the third, to make the game a 5-3 affair. Shedden was able to add one more run in the inning as well, and Indians starter Jeff Lyons was replaced by Kyle Crawford, as the Indians were clinging to a 5-4 lead.
Crawford went the rest of the way for Alvinston, escaping several jams, as he left the bases loaded in the fourth, and left runners on second and third in the fifth. After the second inning, Alvinston bats went quiet, but they were able to add important insurance runs in the top of the seventh, when after Chapman walked, Sheppard crushed a two run homerun for Alvinston, to widen the lead to 7-4. Crawford pitched a clean seventh to ensure the win for Alvinston.
Jeff Lyons was the winning pitcher for Alvinston, with Kyle Crawford battling hard in relief to earn the save, and minimize the Shedden attack for the rest of the evening. Nic Goetz suffered the loss for Shedden, but did retire 10 Alvinston swingers by way of the strikeout. Chris Sheppard was 4/4 for Alvinston, with three singles, one homerun, one run and 3 RBI's. Andy Triest was 3/4 for Alvinston with three singles, and two runs scored. Final score was Alvinston 7, Shedden 4. Alvinston is now 4-1 on the young season.
