Cyclones-Viking LSSAA soccer double header
andrew brethauer may 19th, 2011

Sarnia, ON - Home field advantage may have helped two more teams win LSSAA championships Thursday. After the St. Clair Colt senior rugby teams won on their own field Tuesday in the Rugby finals, the Northern Viking senior girls soccer team and St. Christopher Cyclones senior boys soccer each found success on their home pitches, on route to claiming their league championships.

In the senior girls soccer game, the Northern Vikings took on the St. Christopher Cyclones. The Vikings had not allowed a single goal all season, and the opening to the championship game was no exception. With the Vikings on the constant attack early in the half, it wouldn't take long for the girls to find the back of the net. Marlowe Pecora would get behind the Cyclone defence and goalie, and have a wide open net to put tap the ball into and give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

The Viking's would put shot after shot on net, but they would miss wide or be picked up by Cyclones goalie Celine Norman.

But the attack would soon result into another goal, as Kelsie Roberts picks up a goalie kick and sends a long shot over the head of the out of position keeper to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

The Cyclones could not maintain any attack during the first half, allowing the Vikings to take a 2-0 lead into the half.

In the second half, the Vikings would continue their offensive outburst, as  Roberts would pick up her second goal of the same, while Sydney Mellon, Alicia MacDougall and Erin Babbey would add single goals for the Vikings. The Cyclones would manage to score two goals, but the heavy offence proved to much, as the Vikings capture the LSSAA Senior Girls Soccer champion.

The Northern Girls will represent LSSAA in the SWOSSAA 2A division, while Northern will represent LSSAA in the 3A division.

Just down Michigan Ave. the two schools would battle for the senior boys championship, as St. Chris and Northern played at St. Christopher.

Michael Rocca would give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead in the first half, while Ryan Greenwood would give the Cyclones an early 2-0 lead to open the second half.

The game would get physical as the Vikings looked to close the gap. But off a free kick, Corey Jackson would spot Mark Spinozzi in the box for the header that hit inside the post but landed in the net, giving the Cyclones a 3-0 lead.

Northern would continue to attack, but the Cyclones managed to keep the ball away from their own net. Cyclone keeper Chris Kerwin would go on to make two big saves to keep the shutout, as the Cyclones capture the Senior Boys LSSAA Championship by a 3-0 final.

Like the girls teams, the Cyclones will represent the LSSAA in division 2A, while the Vikings would represent in division 3A.
