Colts come back to win senior boys rugby finals
andrew brethauer may 17th, 2011

St. Clair High School - The St. Clair Colts are the 2011 LSSAA senior boys rugby champions after a come from behind, 17-10 overtime victory over the Northern Vikings.

The two teams showed how evenly matched they were through the first minutes of the first half, as neither team could move the ball far down field without running into a wall of the other teams back line. The game remained scoreless until St. Clair moved into scoring position, and instead of going in for the try, Denver Spearman sent a kick through the uprights to give the Colts the early 3-0 lead.

But that lead wouldn't last long, as the Vikings quickly moved the ball down the field and go close the St. Clair goal line. The Colts put up a wall on the line, not allowing the Vikings to move in, but continued attacks by the Vikings, spreading the ball out across the line finally found a hole, as the Vikings got in for the first try of the game and their first lead 5-3.

From there the Vikings outplayed the Colts for the remainder of the half. After a big run down the sidelines set up the Vikings deep in the St. Clair half, it didn't take long for Northern to punch in the try to put themselves up 10-3 by the end of the first half.

The Colts would start the second half with better field possession, but they couldn't break through the Viking defence who held onto their lead. The Vikings, who were pushed back to within ten yards of their goal line twice, sent two kicks back to the half line, making the Colts start from scratch every time they got close.

The Vikings would even get a long run back deep into the Colts zone and threaten to score again, but after a turn over, Kalen Hellinga burst through the Viking defence and brought it to the goal line where Spearman would grab the loose ball and get into the end zone for the try, adding the convert as well to make it a 10-10 game.

Neither team could hold onto the ball long enough to score late in the half as the rain made the field conditions slippery. The game would need overtime to crown a champion.

In the first half of overtime, another stand off results in no score, as neither team was letting anything through. In the second half of overtime, St. Clair would catch a break, as Jimmy Troung got out wide on the Vikings and got through the defence, running it all the way back for the Colts second try of the game, and Spearman his second convert, giving them a 17-10 lead.

Northern gave a last effort to try and tie the game, but the Colt line held them back away from the end zone, as they went on to victory with a 17-10 win.

Both teams will represent LSSAA in SWOSSAA, as the Colts will be in the 2A division and the Vikings in the 3A division.
