Binnington named CHL Goalie of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that 2011 NHL Entry Draft prospect Jordan Binnington of the Owen Sound Attack is the CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending May 15 with a 2-0 record and a goals-against-average of 1.94 and save percentage of .943.

Binnington backstopped the Attack to their first Robertson Cup victory earning the final two wins of the Rogers OHL Championship Series against the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors. Facing elimination down 3-2 in the series, Binnington started Game six on Thursday and made an impressive 41 saves including 14 in the third period as first star of the 3-2 win. He got the call in net for Game seven on Sunday and made another 25 saves in the 3-2 overtime win. The Attack will now compete in the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup and will face the WHL Champion Kootenay Ice on Saturday night.

Binnington, a 17-year-old from Richmond Hill, ON, is playing in his second OHL season for the Attack and is the third ranked goaltender by NHL Central Scouting for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. In 46 regular season games this season he had a record of 27-12-1-4 with one shutout and a goals-against-average of 3.05 and a save percentage of .899.

Also considered for the award this week was back-to-back winner Maxime Clermont of the Gatineau Olympiques who made 167 saves in four games against the Saint John Sea Dogs with a goals-against-average of 2.67 and save percentage of .923. In the WHL, playoff MVP Nathan Lieuwen of the Kootenay Ice went 3-0 with a goals-against-average of 2.11 and save percentage of .929.
