Lancers pick up first win of the season
andrew brethauer may 9th, 2011

Germain Park - The LCCVI Lancers picked up their first win of the season with a 1-0 shutout of the St. Patrick Fighting Irish Monday afternoon at Germain Park.

The Lancers were on the offensive early on as Spencer Krall let a rocket shot glide passed the Irish goalie, but it hit the crossbar and went out of play. But their attack didn't stop there, as the Lancers continued to put shots on net, but Irish goalie Brandon Ryan was there, leaping to push the ball over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.

The action would then settle in, as both teams would go back and forth crossing midfield, but their scoring chances remained minimal as neither team could get a pass through to an open player with a scoring opportunity.

Travis Marshall would have an excellent scoring chance in close for the Irish, but the Lancer defence was able to make a shot on net challenging. A foul in close to the Lancer goalie would give the Irish their best chance at a goal, but their free kick would sail high over the net.

Blaine D'alessandro would have his own scoring chance, but the Irish had issues keeping the ball down, as his shot went high over the net. He would have another opportunity before the end of the half, but his cross box shot would hit the far post and managed to stay out, resulting in a scoreless first half.

Coming out in the second, the Lancers took back the offensive attack, and put the pressure on the Irish goalie. Spencer Steinman would have an early chance for the Lancers to put them up a score, as a pass through ball would get to him with a wide open net, but his deflection would go over the net, keeping it scoreless.

Their second chance came with two Lancers parked in front, and as a bouncing ball came to Derek Blonsky, he would shoot it again high over the net.

But the Lancers still continued to keep the ball in the Irish end, and it would soon pay off, as a pass into the crease would give Blonsky a scoring chance. Irish goalie Brandon Ryan would come over to challenge, but Blonsky would put is shot to the far corner, and give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.

The Lancers would not give up the attack, as Kyle Brothers would get a pass in alone with the goalie, but Ryan would pick up the ball before a decent shot was made. After an offside call on the Lancers and a shot right into Ryan's arms, the Lancers could not increase their lead, but still managed to keep the ball in their possession.

With the game coming to an end, the Irish would move up their defence trying to increase their attack. Josh Lockwood would get into the Lancer box and move through the defence, but the Lancers would swarm him, not allowing any chance at a scoring opportunity.

The Lancers would hold onto the 1-0 victory. Adam Orrange of the Lancers would pick up the shutout with the victory. LCCVI will next take on SCITS while St. Patrick's will take on St. Clair. Both games are on Tuesday, May 10th.
