The Alvinston Indians opened up their 2011 St. Thomas & District Major Fastball League schedule, with their home opener on Thursday night in Alvinston winning 2-1.
The game pitted a pitchers duo between Springfield ace Shaun Winship, and young Indians hurler Kyle Crawford. The game remained scoreless for 6 innings, with the Indians mustering one hit and two walks through six innings, while Springfield reached base only once through five innings against Crawford , with the young twirler throwing a no-hitter. In the sixth, the Indians went to the bullpen bringing in ace Brad Young. Young allowed a walk in the sixth, but held the fort. In the seventh inning, Young fell victim to a defensive error, and an unearned run came across home plate, as Springfield took a 1-0 lead, with the Indians down to their final at bat. With one out, Indians first baseman Ryan Chapman clobbered a 1-1 offering over the left centre field fence, to knot the game at one's. But in true Indians tradition, they continued the comeback, with shortstop Aaron Stocking smacking a triple to the centre field fence, and then right fielder Tim Brown followed by completing the suicide squeeze to perfection, as he laid down a bunt, and Stocking was able to score the winning run for the Indians.
What a comeback for Alvinston in their opening game, in what turned out to be a great game to open the season for both teams! Brad Young was credited for the win for Alvinston, but Crawford should be commended for his no-hitter through five innings.
The Indians travel to Springfield next Tuesday for another matchup with the Springfield Brewers, beginning at 8:30pm.
