Vikings remain undefeated with victory over Eagles
andrew brethauer may 5th, 2011

The Northern Vikings are 4-0-0-0 after a 4-0 victory over the North Lambton Eagles in senior girls soccer from Thursday afternoon.

The first place Vikings showed their offensive power against the Eagles, keeping the ball constantly in the Eagles half, and quickly pouncing on it when it crossed the centre. Viking goalie Deanna Ritchie went most of the contest untested while the Vikings were relentless with their attack on North Lambton keeper Kerrie Dirven.

The Vikings first chance came from Victoria Regan, whose shot beat Dirven, but couldn't beat the cross bar. Lauren Dann had a breakaway chance for the Vikings but couldn't catch up to the long pass, and couldn't get a decent shot.

Northern managed to get in close on Dirven, but North Lambton managed to hold a solid defence while the Vikings tried to pass the ball around rather than sending hard shots onto the net. The shots they did get through were easily picked up by Dirven, as in close was not working for the Vikings.

Kelsie Roberts would find the remedy to the problem, as the Viking forward took a free kick close to the centre line and sent it high in the air, bringing Dirven out to play it. Unfortunately she misplayed the distance and ball sailed over her head and into the net to make it a 1-0 Viking lead.

Shortly after the first goal, the Vikings would use the free kick to their advantage again, as Sydney Mellon would bend a kick over the defence and into the corner of the net to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

Northern would also making it 3-0 with another free kick opportunity, but they would hit the goal post. Northern would end the half on the offensive and head into the second half with a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Roberts would have her second chance at a goalie with a penalty shot, but again, Dirven would get lucky as the ball hits the cross bar and stays out. But it would be only a matter of time before Roberts would finally pot her second goal, as she weaved her way through the defence and got in close, chipping the shot passed Dirven to make it a 3-0 game.

North Lambton was not able to respond and get offence going, as the ball spent much of the half in their end.

Victoria Regan would ice the game for the Vikings after a deflection sent the ball into the net giving the Vikings the 4-0 victory win.

North Lambton had a difficult time with keeping the ball in play, and found a lot of their throw ins and goal kicks going straight into the Vikings position, leaving the Eagles with little to catch their breath before they were back on defence.

Northern has not allowed a single goal in 4 games, scoring 17 in the mean time, while they currently sit on top of the senior girls soccer division. Northern Lambton goes to a 2-0-1-1 record and sits in third place behind St. Christopher's.

North Lambton next plays St. Chris on May 10th at 5:00pm.
